spacing ring gears
so ive come to find out that some 4.8 lux gears i bought wont fit in my 4.3 centres without spacing the ring gear out closer to the pinion... ive never read anywhere of this bein done... can you buy spacers? or would i have to get them made up specailly??
just after suggestions, opinions??

Spacers will cost you money and the 11mmx1mm pitch high tensile fine thread screws to hold the crownwheel on will probably be hard to find as well. If you want I can email you a drawing you can give to the man with the nc cutting machine[water plasma laser] so he can cut it for you. Then you have to get it accurately ground to the size you have decided it should be. As someone once said "life was not meant to be easy".
i think the screws will already be long enough... becuase these are stock yota gears they are thinner, but when u buy after market 4.8s they make them fatter so they fit in the 4.3 3rd member if desired... this leads me to beleive their is room... a skinny crownwheel and a spacer is the same as a fatty with no spacer

i hate to ask.. but how the fark can u shim a pinion, its round, and must run though a hole in the end of the 3rd member, and also though a seal... so wouldnt shimming it sideways fark all this alignment up?hophoar wrote:It's not the crownwheel ,but the pinion that you need to shim to get the right gear tooth depth.

The shim goes between the end of the gear and the bearing which lifts the pinion up into the crownwheel. Check it out on pirate they'll have the answers for how much spacer needed. Pull a diff apart and you might understand where the spacer needs to go as there is usually a shim in there that gives the correct pinion depth.

still dont get it... i was under the impression that it wasnt the depth of the pinion that is diffrent between 4.3s and 4.8s but how fat it is... ie. 1 less tooth on the pinion so its got a smaller dia.... so the teeth of the pinion dont mesh compleatly into the teeth of the crownwheel...their would be to much gap between them.....hophoar wrote:The shim goes between the end of the gear and the bearing which lifts the pinion up into the crownwheel. Yep your right it's not the depth of the pinion thats different between housings, but you need to shim the pinion to achieve the correct tooth depth. You agree that they are bevil gears and that you wanted to shom the crownwheel off the hemisphere to get the correct backlash for the gears and to do this would require specially made spacers. By shimming the pinion, your essencially doing the same as shimming the crownwheel by moving the gears toward each other to achieve the correct backlash. Pinion shims are readily available in a number of thicknesses, so don't need any special shm made and theres a fairly big seal surface that can accomodate the moving of the pinion up into the housing.
sweet ok so im with u... this means i can take my current centres, and the 4.8 r&ps to a diff shop and they will be able make em fit....or is it more complicated than that??hophoar wrote:Yep your right it's not the depth of the pinion thats different between housings, but you need to shim the pinion to achieve the correct tooth depth.
