I was driving through France the other week and came across a new Santana PS10 (Spanish Series LR copy) for sale. It is amazing how similar the components are to original series bits and pieces.

First a couple of pics of the overall truck.

Front diff looks stock rover. But the rear diff is huge (hard to judge size from the pics) - looks about the size of the big Nissan Diff in real life - and is HYPOID!!! - santana did what LR should have done years ago...

For those that aren't aware, the PS10 runs an IVECO 2.8L turbo diesel and an LT85 5-speed (Santana own the rights to this and still make new ones).

The hubs and swivels look exactly the same as original series parts - except for the one difference that the santana versions have disc mounts. The santana also runs a wider track than a series - looks about the same as a coiler.

Glad you appreciate the pics.

Forgot to mention, that the PS10 has the option of 255/85-16 tyres (33") and a rear diff lock.

Someone should start selling them in OZ...

Patrols are all coil and only troopies have rear leaves, at least it could have coils up front.

I agree that coils are better, but with parabolic springs it is hard to tell the difference. And the way LR is going, the PS10 will be a much better option than the next defender.

Compared to the current defender, the PS10 has a bigger engine, stronger gearbox (probably), stronger rear diff, and a factory diff lock option. The only downside is the lack of coils (and maybe the looks depending on your point of view).

leafs v coils ---- who gives a fark.
the santana was / is built for military contracts. comfort is not an issue.
load capacity and reliability are the issues. consumer / civi sales are just an added bonus.

BTW isn't the optional rear locker that pommie POS with the plastic diff cover ?

That's what I had heard too, but I don't see how that can be since the Santana runs a huge hypoid diff in the rear, and the POS KAM mechanno DIY locker is only for the Rover diff.

mabe they have developed it for the santana, probably worth the $ to get a mil contract.

like hitting my head against a wall. its my head and i'll do what i want with it

being let down by head lights, tail lights and switches(these are more important than you think,esp when you run electric brakes on a 1.8 tonne trailer) on a 3 year old vehicle is not my idea of a well exicuted idea.

have never owned a car or anythiing other than landrovers/range rover.

They look ok and specs seem good, but for a civil not military purpose leafs are a bit crude for 2005. Build quality couldnt be worse than Landrover so it has some good points.

The local mountain rescue team had a PS10 on test for a couple of days. The engine seems strong, once you get used to the long throttle travel. Brakes are very good. It was the first time I have been in a vehicle with parabolic springs, and I was pretty impressed with the ride quality. Having said that, the Santana has one or two handling quirks which you don't get on a 110 - it doesn't hustle quite as well - but no-one on here is particularly concerned with that are you? Front seats were not as supportive as a Defender (!) but there is adequate room in the middle row for me (6' 2") which is very welcome.

I have heard that Santana are to replace the LT-85 at some point with a ZF manual - and indeed the newer models on the forecourt have a more conventional looking gearlever rather than the dog leg type that the test vehicle had.

Not yet. The one I photographed was at a service station/car dealer in a small village, and they only had one Santana - they seemed to sell lots of different makes of cars. I have seen about 6 others driving around on the road, all of which were wagons or hardtops (utes aren't very popular in france and germany). Keeping my eyes peeled though.

Love the ute....But coils all round, even Land Rover got that part right.

Must admit the Santana has bee a step ahead in all the reliabliity area's where LR have been left wondering

Driveline and Body of a Santana on a Chassis of a defender would be the perfect all round rig in my mind.
