Power Steering to Manual Steering swap

Hi all,

The steering on my 79 Rangie is very light.

It has also developed a lot of slop in the power steering box (steering shaft).
I have tried to adjust it out, but the adjusting nut gets quite tight without much change in the slop.

It also shakes alot at 70kmh, but that is suspension bushes (to be fixed over xmas).

I have another chassis/wreck in the back yard that has a manual steering box.
Is it an easy swap from power steering to the manual box?

I currently run 31x10.5x15, but am looking at fitting 33s later.
Will the manual box be too stiff?

A bonus with the swap will be one less system that leaks oil.
Another bonus is it will create space for an on board air (aircon) compressor.

One question, WHY? why lose the joys of power steer, would you like some leaves aswell?

should be piss easy to swap. i looked at power steer for my 72 rr but have had trouble finding a box that fits a 72
range rover & series one landy!

Several Answers:

It's too light.
It (pump) leaks.
It (steering box) needs a rebuild.
It takes up space where the on board air will go.
Something else to fail.

well it would cost about $100 to rebuild.thats new bushes , seals and fluid.seal all the hose fittings up.how much is an other box going to cost you.why take a step backwards and off load the power set up.spend all day up the bush with out your power steering and you will beg for it back. hey i think i know where there is a small steam engine that you may fit in your engine bay.running the drive belt to the diff may be a problem....

If your box is too light, it needs a rebuild - can't remember what it is that craps itself to cause that, but if you get a changeover reco box, it'll be right as rain...

Harry, I have a power steering box from a 79 you can have - it was in a running vehicle but I really don't know how good it is.
