Rust is their biggest downside - they all have some.

Very rare to find one that is factory and has none.

Very common to find it in the floors, specially if they are an MK with the factory side steps as an option; also in the canapy window frames, they are almost always rusted.

Bushes, rubbers etc will all be worn out (if not replaced recently).

Other then that, they are fairly solid - just age is their biggest killer - expect to have to do something to it.

That said, they are easy cars to work on mechanically. Lots of room in the engine bay and if it's lifted on 35's it is a sinch to work under - don't even need a jack.

mmmmmm TD engine but only a 4 speed ???? not common at all !
the TD engines nearly always had a 5 speed box behind em in 'Aussie editions"

Front locker is a huge plus
and the rest sounds pretty good too

Usual dramas are......

RUST..... gotta expect it after all they are "old rigs",
usual rust spots are
Floorpan around the cab / chassis mount ( under ya accelerator foot )

Floorpan underneath the seat locating brackets

Rear floorpan right in the back corners

Under the canopy...2 main spots
one is right on the rear corners and the other is where the flat area turns up adjacent to the front doors.

Roof, mainly around the windscreen rubbers..... once the rubber gets old it dries out and the water gets in and so does the rust !

Firewall, usually the passengers side about 4inches down and 12 inches in from the inner guard

Inner guard, usually the drivers side right down the bottom where it meets the firewall.

Front Radiator support panel..... farkin commom as !
look down the side of the radiator past where the mounting bolts are and also often seen from the front aswell. ( my members thread has pics of that repair )

Sills, always where the join is.... not a major drama to fix at all

Front guards, where they join the sills and sometimes behind the side indicator lens.

Doors, like every door on every make & model that has ever been wet.... bottom corners !!!

Rear 1/4's, usually around the wheelarch very seldom elsewhere tho.

Tailgate, again bottom corners..... but also check around the hinges and the numberplate light.

Other problems.....
None really !
the diesels are farkin strong and last and last and last.... I have one here that I drive daily and it has 829500 K's on the clock... chews about a lit of oil every 5000Ks....
Quite a few have 400,000 K's on em and are going strong as

The gearboxes are prone to get noisey at around 300,000K's andits a simple and fairly inexpensive thing to fix ... front main bearing gives up but I've never seen one fawk up yet and they remain drivable just noisey.

Suspension..... most likely the original spring paks will need replacing if they are still fitted if you seriously want to wheel it in the tougher stuff.

Kingy

Yep what Kingy said, mine only had rust in the sills though. I bought mine with about 240000ks on the clock & it went well. The deisel is solid but if it is hard to start in the morning then the glow plug timer might be shagged, this is no problem though, all you do is turn the key just past "on" and it will click the glow plug relay on manually.

My gearbox was noisy but I did 100000ks with it like this before I sold it.

They do leak a bit of oil from the gearbox (mine did) but I just kept filling it up.

Apart from stuff that stuffs up with age then they are pretty strong.

Not as good as 4WD as a 60 though  (comparable vehicle for age).

Mine towed really well, fairly stable even when loaded to close to maximum.

I sold mine because I am going soft & wanted coils (GQ).

Never seen a 4 speed behind a SD33T though, is it MQ or MK?

If its MQ than the turbo wont be factory, the turbo engine started in 84 when the headlamps went square.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............
