highmount drum widening
who has done it, what size pipe was the centre replaced / sleeved with?
how wide is good, is it worth it, how much extra cable, how far has the fairlead have to be moved away from the drum to allow neat spooling.
cheers bru

Reducing the diameter of the drum would reduce the line speed wouldn't it? should also improve the torque through better gearing.Ossie wrote:Mine was widened 2 inch's, and reduced to about half the size of standard (all work completed by someone else). I also had a new fairlead made to suit.

Reducing the diameter also allows you to have up to 80m of synthetic rope which can assist in long stages. The extra cable on the drum compensates for the reduction and balances out the line speed.
I am unsure if the mod was worth it every persion has an opinion, my hi mount stalled on me three times before the mod, I was more interested in torque than line speed for the OBC.

Whats involved in widening the drum on a High Mount? Ive never realy looked but from my memory there is nothing inside the drum like there is on a low mount so it would just be part the ends of the drum and replace the tube with a longer piece. Am i missing something here? Sounds like something just about anyone with a welder and some good measuring could do in a short time.
I know narrowing a low mount takes about 30 min if you know what your doing.

just got my highmount from ryano (thanks mate). got a 6 hp motor too. will take the drum out on sunday (before the cherry has even been popped) and have it modded this week.
has anyone got the diameters yet - assuming a 4mm thick sleeve will suffice for a 150mm extension. anyone have tables or calculations.
will weld ears on the back too, plus 3 bearings and thread shaft - who does this eg un harden machine re harden.
is a normal width hause ok if it is away from the winch?
running 11mm plasma.
also bought 6 col hershe solinoids and using 2 in parallel for in single for out. rated at 200A continious.
cheers bru
