DIFF LOCKS on 80 Series

ok, so i've setup my pump, and air tank, switching etc, and its ready to go, i've ordered the ARB airlocker, and its commin next week, and i've booked in to have it fitted ..

The guys where i'm fitting it, recommend fitting it in the rear ..

What are peoples opinions on this .. neither diff needs attention , and both seem to have pathetic LSD

I have ARB diff locks in both front and rear of my 60 series...now I know the 2 different models may have different diffs in them...but in my experience when I flick the magic blue buttons I generally use the front a lot more than the rear.

generally, u use your lockers when going up something which means the weight bias is towards the rear. the vehicle climbs more efficiently when pushed (rear wheels driven) rather than pulled (front wheels driven) which would make it a good idea to put it in the rear.

in any event even if you fitted f&r lockers 2 ur 80 the installers would wire them up so you must activate the rear first then the front. this can be altered but its a load sharing thing with regards to prolonging cv detonation or worse....

well it all depends on what u ordered as the front and rear diffs are diff sizes for a 80, so depending what locker code u ordered it will be quiet a simple operation u ordered one for the front , it will only fit the front and one for the rear will only fit in the rear.
ur front will be only a normal open center and not lsd, ur rear will have a lsd though

Well, untill i get it, i can change the order, but yes, i agree with what was mentioned before, where the wheels with the most weight on them are going to have best traction (not always), and it never crossed my mind that when the vehicle goes up-hill, the weight is more to the rear .. Without thinking about it properly, you'd think engine front, more weight there always etc .. but yeah, sounds good, think i'm going for the rear ... also, having a front locked diff effects steering as well doesnt it?

Also ... now its set-up, its not such a big deal to do the front locker later too ... then i can go picking lines i could never do before.

70% of traction comes from the rear so get it it in the rear and when you come to do the front get it so they are separate and the rear locker is interchangable with the front or how bout you weld the rear and air locker the front

I had a front in my 80 b4 my i got my rear.. and i find that i dont use my front half as much as the rear

Yeah i'd weld the front and back if it wasnt a road driver too ..

i hate to jump in on a toyo conversation but i found i use the front locker more cause the front wheels loose traction when you lift a front wheel which happens alot more than lifting a rear, just my opinions though, hope it helps

Hi
In your position, i would fit the front, because there is plenty of info out there to suggest front locker gets you further because it assists the front climb over things, the rear then pushes, and it has a lsd in there, however pathetic it is....and the big one is the 80 has a weak front standard diff hemi, this doesnt help the diff teeth when you get adventurous with a rear locker....what im saying is the ARB will strengthen the front diff, it is the hardest to change out, will also allow a front end regrease of c/v's and wheel bearings whilst there, and you may save yourself broken front teeth in diff.
