steering woes

Post by missinbits »

just got a wee problem with my pajero with its steering

it seems that when im driving i feel the car shaking and the steering wheel is too
its going to the left basically you let go and you see it wobble like crazy

what is going on u reckon?

i've done some 4x4 in her and i doubt it was that cause i never took a hard knock or nothing but its got me stumped cause its only been like this since that bit of 4x4

any help ppl's?

Hi, get the alignment checked, you likely bashed one of the tie rods, the pulling to the left is a good indicator of this.

Also check to see if the wheels are balanced, had a similar exper ance with a truck we brought and that was all the shaking was.
Cheers

Check the inside of rims for mud. Lumps of mud can be enough to put the wheels out of balance and cause vibration like you describe.

yeah it had a slight alighment problem but wasnt that bad im thinking it may be this

or worst a tie rod like stated

im hoping its mud but i already gave it a good hose down and dead sure the mud was all cleared etc

might take it down to get checked to make sure its not a tie rod etc

Q:would a cracked hub casing do this?

im thinking the hub has cracked and put pressure on bearings etc
what should i be looking into?

tyres are F'd (stupid imported crap)
so the cars now off the road till the source of the cracked hub case etc is sorted..

anyone know where i can get rims n tyres n free wheeling hubs for 89 pajero let us know.

Does the shaking stop when you decelerate? If you can't find anything wrong with your front (hubs) then look at your drive shaft, you could have possibly worn out a UJ, this will cause shaking in the vehicle and the steering wheel. Worth a try.

If the hub is that badly cracked it would take a lot of pressure off the wheel bearing which would give you the wobble you talk about. Lift that wheel off the ground, grab it at the top and bottom of the tyre and try to wobble the tyre - any movement will indicate a problem.

Upper and lower ball joints should not produce a "wobble" unless they are totally farked and I would check they uni's on the rear shaft as the front shaft is only turning with the wheels (it is not being fed power in 2wd)

Worn tie rods will produce a wobble.

tyres no longer round (get the fronts balanced)

loose wheel nuts (gotta check)

hubs fixed:
no bad wobble but a slight vibration under the car can be felt for sure but i think its my tyres and wheel alighment/balance
until i know for sure i wont be driving it around as such

some 31's are going on next f/n and i'll see what happens from there.

If you hit something hard enough to damage the hub, you may have dented the rim or warped it. Get the tyre guys to check it.

damn stupid tyres Grrrrrrrr

well today i really found the problem very quickly and very suddenly

driving along M1 heading to the GC
feel the wobble come back thought it was my hub but nup so i continue on,quicker i moved the more it vibrated so i then turned my attention to the one remaining tyre i had concerns about,so i let off the gas 20kmh and feel for more info when BANG!!!! rear tyres blow car has a trailor and my family in it so i crap myself and whack on brakes before it spun me around, got it off the highway and out of harms way(luckily cause the HWY was packed and everyone cop'd bits of car and rubber..

so now the hubs fixed its def tyre issues so cars def staying off road till i get a loaned set to wheel around on till next thursday...
i'll post pics of the carnage cause it dented rear qtr ripped the flare of the side and fubar'd all the paint from rear bumper to rear door..

not happy jan :(
