My 80 series is jumping out of low rage going down hill I'm not sure weather it is not engaged properly in the first place. It on does it going down hill under compression, pretty scarey and not cool, does anyone have any ideas?

my fj40 does exactly the same thing. under power too.
fj 40, 82 model factory ps..... oohh yeh, 350 chev. lots more to do. getting there, getting there....

Uesd to do it my old 55. I had a short ocky strap from a heater hose that I looped over the 4x4 stick to hold it in place in low range.

Dodgy I hear you say, yep, but for $5 and it works, who cares.

My 60 also has this symptom and I have been advised that for the hassle of ripping it all out and changing things completely to fix it up that I should just hold it in. If you drive up a hill/down and it is under load without the stick being manually held in it spits right? So, what I suggest is either the dodgy ocky strap or (as I am currently working on) a metal flip round base that has one of those clamps. To understand what I mean look at a vehicle mounted fire extinguiser, those are the metal clip i am talking about.

No it means your gearbox/transfer case need a rebuild
but do as above if you carn't aford it yet ;) ;)

My 1st gear sometimes jumps out, especially going down hills. For now I just keep my left hand on it to make sure it stays in.

I think maybe it might be the shifter, because it is hard to pull up to go into low. Bloody 80 series straight shift bullshit I liked the "U" shift pattern better in my 75 and 47 series. I will have stop workin on the motorhome and pull it apart over Xmas, thanks for the sugestions anyway guys.

my suzuki sierra also does this. Its a pain in the ass having to hold it in while it is under load. I dont really know what is wrong with it but I am just changing mine over. Would like to know what the problem is if you find out tho.

Just a small bit of advise......

Dont park it on a hill in low range.......

I did when i didnt know that there was a problem with it & she took off down the hill on her own

My 80 had the downhill symptoms for a while now - thought it was the engine mount flexing and knocking it out - now I can't use low range at all - even on the flat - the gears have died!

Off to be pulled down over xmas and $$$ spent on gearing! Yay! not!

Try adding moreys and check it's locking in fully on selection!

had it happen all the time in my troopy. Had to drive with one foot on the low range gear stick. Apparently it is common in 75s. my 60 hasnt done it yet thpugh. Bloody scary when it did go on big down hills.

When that happens try adjusting the shift mechanism screw adjuster - as when you shift across into low 4 (40 and 70 series ) the lever usually comes to rest on the metal stop (which guides the lever through H2, H4 and L4). You can also mod the guide so that you have L2.

If that adjuster doesn't work then you'll have to go deeper - or strap it in place.
