Are they quality wheels? (I assume they're steel). Apparently the knockoffs of ROH's and Rockcrawler etc, don't necessarilily have ADR approved sized beads.
Funny as it sounds, he may also have "small" wheels, right at the bottom of the manufacturing tolerance band. I've seen this in $1200 magnesium racing wheels, so it is possible.....

Are you SURE he's not running BFG's...those debead right and left in competition...RIGHT and LEFT.
If not, he's got to running a junk steel rim (probably undersize, the kind they use in implements) without much, if any, lip on the inner bead. NO TIRE has a better bead than ProComp...NO TIRE!

I say "If you like em try em", tyre arguments are the easiest to start on any forum or gathering, Thats becuase every one is an expert!!!! There are so many good tyre brands and tread designs out there, it is darn confusing...I stuck with my BFG'S cause they work for me, find one that works for you.....

actually, the reason cal & maurice did so well on sunday is pretty soft. after saturdays drives, we all realised the tracks were a lot easier than we expected, and after a bit of a glimpse into the rules we worked out that you can afford to hit a couple of cones for the day if you don't use the spotter strap at all and finish every track. so they took the safe/g&y/easy option on sunday - didn't attempt any bonus lines,and took out a cone here and there where everyone else used the spotter strap (and usually took out the cone anyway).
i don't think it was a comp where you could say "that car did well because those tyres are so good", there was so many different types of cars that vehicle dynamics and chassis/suspension design play a larger part than tyre type.
cal only used any throttle on 1 or 2 climbs over the weekend (and made every climb) but i would still much rather drive with a radial tyre (krawler ot x-terrain) on that type of rock. whereas the rock down here with all it's razor sharp edges caused by the frost and ice destroys radial tyres in about half a day's driving.
i think the x-terrain are as good of a rockcrawling tyre as anything interco, bfgoodrich or goodyear have to offer, but for a car built to thrash you are still better off with a bias tyre IMO.
if i had a 4wd tow rig it would have x-terrains on it.

I can't fault the traction, but running same pressure, none of us have ever done the same, go figure!!!
We fit 4wd tyres up dry at work, to make them harder to roll off the rim, or spin the rim in the tyre, but sounds like tubes, or 2ndairs, or beadlocks might help him on weekends?
Now, what we really need in the pro comp range is the Xterrain carcass, with a more aggressive tread design, but pro comp lack of noise, but good handling on road, so i dont have to put up with the poor performance on road of TSL's, to get good winter 4wding traction once I get there.
Then i can keep my 37 Xterrains for desert travel, high speed touring, summer 4wding only, because i love the no punctures with them.
And to show you OUR stickey compound...here's a shot of it right off my crawler just a few minutes ago.
Tell me who's compound that is??? Have you actually seen a compound do that? Mickey?..NOPE...BFG?...NOPE, GoodYear?...NOPE, TOYO?....NOPE, MAxxis?...Nope, because only ours does and THAT's why the teams over here call it a Cheater Tire...
That tire has a break in of about 15 minutes, that's it. It will stay just like that for 4 sandstone events (7 dirt/rock events) before you notice the outside lugs finally getting rubbed down worth considering replacing. Right now, our plans are 5 events per stickey on the man made surfaces that are far harder on tires than any other surface...the other stickeys last 3 events before teams are replacing them due to wear and chunking.
So, someone may have told you that we have their compound but what they didn't say was that we actually "aquired" compounds from just about every tire brand but that does not mean we are using it. We tested them thoroughly, liked some but not others, then came up with a unique idea right at the end that uses a mix of a special "compound coctail"...I thank the two compound engineers, Markus Hancock and Ken Ruille from Cooper for finding what I asked for in my brainstorm of a compound ingredient that nobody ever considered. They ran with the idea and WHAM, we've got three big wins in 4 events. Also, we have a tire that breaks in like no other...look at the lateral grain on that tire...PERFECT paddles that grab like nothing you've seen.

Dustin would you mind sticking a screwdriver into the lug and taking a photo of the "memory" that they have.
This should have its own seperate thread for Comp spec tyres.

I went through two sets of 35"s on my GU.
Only wrecked one in that time and I did loads of off road and many of the hard tracks in Vic.
We also competed in 5 Navruns without any dramas.
Great on dirt & rock, but not the best in mud, especially once the tread wears down a little and the shoulders get rounded off.
As said before, great all round tyre for those that need a good on road tyre as well.
