gday all, just got off the phone to 3 engineers and the deal is they wont certify anything over 2in, apparently new laws are a few days away and this is it, anyone else heard this?

i live in nsw, what is this country coming to! next you know, they ll be stopping us from even buying a four wheel drive! and what about all the after market shops that sell all the gear, this would have to affect them. wonder what they think about all this?

Maybe,,,, but it doesnt stop us from wheeling.... so build yourself a offroad rig and use your current rig as a tow rig :D

So thats VIC and QLD with the 2in limit ey, im insured with bushtrack, they have no probs with the mods and they never mentioned an engineers cert, my veh is registered, will my insurance company hit me up for an engineers cert if i claim?

so im guessing your car is engineered bogged, what have you got, lift wise i mean, im looking at lowering mine to 3 in spring, 2 in body, will that be engineered in QLD as far as you know

Mine was engineered 6in lift, 1.5in body, and 33s on 15x8s.
NFI on Qld ask engineer.

Its not the matter of being lucky, It is that hw probly had it done a while ago, like most of us that got it done when our mods were finished. All i say is, it seems to late to run and get it done and if you come unstuck by just being tight to hand the money over to bad. I really feel sorry for those guys who built there trucks to current law that wont get it passed with the new laws.

yep, 2+ yrs ago now.

I agree with your last section there, about people thinking they are doing the right thing, and then will get reamed.. its horse crap.

As far as I'm aware you don't need to get anything "engineered" up in Qld. According to the Qld Transport guide to modifying vehicles, suspension height must not be modified by more than 1/3 (up or down)

Have been told you need pre-approval before putting in body lift, then to get it inspected afterwards

And I do believe 3" raised coils are illegal

Do as my mate does, take back roads and avoid being seen.

Worst comes to worst, you'll get a letter saying you're required to take your vehicle down for an inspection and will give you a date for it - gives you plenty of time to put those standard springs/shocks/wheels back on!

So has anyone had a 3" lift engineered in qld? I beleived its 1/3 of the bump stop in qld? Anyone know the bumpstop soze of GQ? or could you get a new bumpstop engineered and it would pass? I h8 transport departments. Why can't they let us have our fun. Half the time they don't even know what they are talking about.

mate if your driveing around in an unengineered truck your playing with fire. you run over someone or injure anyone due to the fact your truck is un road worthy youll be doin time behind bars. im pissed off because im tryn do the right thing and you just get bent over for it.

Ok got this off the QLD site.

- The ride height between the rubber bumpstop and the corresponding metal stop may be reduced or increased by no more than one third.

- The rebound travel measured between the rubber rebound stop and the corresponding metal stop (or extension of the shock absorber for vehicles without a rebound stop) may be reduced or increased by no more than one third.

If these are tru, why do i only ever see cops defecting low cars for the 100mm rule (to lowest point off the ground) in qld and never have a go at their bumpstops. They would check for a 4by. Don't want to get their hands dirty?

And if this is tru then how far could you lift a standard patrol without sagged springs. Is their a spec on this measurment?

What are the rules in other states? Maybe i should move for the love of 4bying?

I've asked countless times before but it seems that no-one actually knows the bump stop measurements of a standard GQ. So if no-one knows, how can they prove you have exceeded the allowed lift? :?:

if/when new laws happen 3" springs will be illegal in QLD.

2"+2" will be legal (as it is now) but will need some major MAJOR hassles to get passed.

2" sus + 3" body +25mm tyre height (+50mm diamemeter) (probably counted as 33" booooo! but may be 34" if we're lucky) will also be legal in QLD if the vehicle passes swerve tests, torsional tests, emergency braking tests, speedo recalibration etc etc.

Currently any QLD vehicle running more than +15mm diameter tyres is illegal and cannot be engineered.


I believe you can get more than 2" suspension lift kits engineered at present but will not be able to shortly.

The maximum net lift you will be allowed to run before needing to pass all these engineering tests is gonna be 50mm (INCLUDING TYRES). From what base exactly I dunno.

Still waiting for a response to my 4 hour email essay on issues such as this... not seen a thing. Might have to flick him a reminder.

That means either 2" suspension on 31"s or slightly larger tyres but no lift (because you wont run 33" rubber without lift).

Note this is less than present.

There's gonna end up being a huge market for 30mm lift kits that's for sure.

There is still a possibility due to a loophole in the wording that you may be able to run 3" sus lift if that's a modification of shock movement by less than 1/3.

But as soon as you pass 50mm total lift you need to pass swerve testing at 110kph and have the vehicle feel safe in the tester's eyes.

I might go back to NO lift or 1" lift and chop seven types of shit out of my rig to stay under 2" total lift on 33/34" rubber.

Waiting on that response in earnest I can tell you.


Dont expect any of our comments to have made any impact since i'm probably the ONLY person in QLD who approached out DOTRS candidate off this board. Go read the thread.

Just had a GQ we built engineered on friday. GQ has 5 inch suspension and a 2 inch body lift. 2 sets of tyres, 35's and 37's. passed no worries, truck is very neat (for now) and he was impressed with all the mods. A lot of technical BS was required regarding suspension, linkages etc but still able to be engineered in NSW. Nothing new to be introduced yet.

Wouldn't dismiss this as I was informed that VIC POL are investigating an accident where a highly lifted vehicle fell over rounding a bend causing death. Focusing on the engineering aspects.

Reaming results not known! ;)
