Same Engine Swap Legalities NSW?

Post by Ultima RB »

I'm thinking about replacing a worn out 2F motor with a working 2F motor into an FJ40. Reason for replacing is because it's cheaper than reconditioning.

What is the process involved other than the mechanical side? Would I need to have a thorough inspection and notify the RTA? Or can I simply swap it over and keep driving?

Just keep driving it. You will how ever have to have the new engine number viafied by a blue slip roady.

Bugger, so I'll have to fix up all the other bits to get it passed a blue slip.

...Only just scraped through with a pink slip last time.

The blue slip is just the RTA contracting out some work and if you say it is just to verify the new engine number you should be ok.

The blue slip should just be an adjustment of records with a blue slip inspection station. They will look at your engine and the numbers on it maybe verify it with a reciept. About $22!

You can get a Blue slip just for the transfer of engine and not the rest of the vehicle as long as it is currently rego'ed. I did the same thing with the 2L in my 4runner. They didn't look at the rest of the car

Awesome, that's very good to know.

I'll probably go with the full swap and see how this new motor runs, if all is good then go for the blue slip. If there are problems then I'll use the best parts of both motors and rebuild whatever else.

Thanks!

I changed from petrol to diesel and all they did was an adjustment of records (blue slip): type changed from "P" (petrol) to "D" (diesel) and replaced the old engine # for the new engine #... and off you go to the rta with the paperwork in hand.
