Hilux viscous fan

I've been having some trouble with my 2.8D Hilux getting hot. It's not getting into the red on the temp gauge, but it is certainly getting close. Last summer, the temp gauge never moved, even on the hottest day.

It generally gets hot when driving up hills, or when the speed gets up to around 110-120km/h mark. My initial thoughts are that the viscous fan isn't working properly.

Does anyone know how to test the viscous fan? I thought that it should be pretty hard to turn if I stop the car when it is running hot, but mine doesn't seem any harder to turn than when the car is cold. Does this mean the viscous hub is stuffed?

I've already replaced the oil inside the viscous hub, but that doesn't seem to have helped.

if you find out what your prob is let me know i'm chasing the same thing.
i've rplaced the oil inside the viscous , replaced thewater pump , had the radiator cleaned and checked , droped radiator to suit body lift , but sill gets hot when pushing hard up hills and around 120km.

With Diesels, they always run cool when they aren't working hard.

Check that the thermostat isn't shagged, check the shroud is all okay, make sure that you have the engine correctly timed and that anything in FRONT of the radiator isn't blocked either! Such as air con, oil coolers etc.

I can only suggest these things as I own a dieslel and it only gets warmer under heavy load - ie; high 3rd pulling 80 ks up a long hill. :evil:

Give it an oil change an see wheher it makes any difference at all.

You should be able to hear the viscous fan spool up as well, if you can't hear it - then that's a contributing problem - at 110-120 your fan is doing jack anyway.
