Okay..the Daihatsu Applause has the same engine (HD-E 1.6L) as the Feroza, only difference is the cam.
So...the gearbox in an applause should mate up to a Feroza engine. If the applause was rear wheel drive, it would be perfect to set up a divorced xfer case using a short intermediate driveshaft...
Problem is, I think they are all front wheel drive. Now..never having looked under a frontwheel drive vehicle...how does the driveshaft come out of the gearbox?? Could it be adapted to go backwards to an xfercase?
If this was possible...could be a relatively easy solution to get lower xfercase gears??

Applauses are FWD. The gearbox and diff are all one assembly and the motor is mounted east-west, instead of north -south as the Feroza's are.
So if you put the Applause gearbox assy onto a Feroza you'd end up with the drive shafts pointing north-south under the Feroza (could be handy for parking- would be able to drive sideways! )

No, not changing my mind, just thinking through stuff. Someone asked me last night when am I SAS'ing the Feroza, and the main reason I won't SAS it is because there is no point without lower xfcase gearing options as well..and I don't want to turn the Feroza into a full blown project
I've got 2 trains of thought/planning happening at the moment..
1. Buy a Rocky. Sell drivetrain, buy engine + hilux gear. Which engine? Unsure as yet.
2. Buy wrecker Rocky (chassis/body, nothing else) and cheap running hilux and swap engine + drivetrain + everything needed to Rocky.
Also looks like the LWB Rocky is the go, removeable rear roof, and good option to go dual case.
I'd love to try running a slush box. Would make offroad crawling so much easier imho. But don't know what cheap engine/gearbox/toy xfer case option I can do :|
Anyway...bit of luck and I'll have work straight away, most likely will pick up cheap Rocky and start cutting a bit

Well, as you're not sure of what engine to go for.......I recommend the Holden V6.
I got a wrecked Hilux (all the gear) V6 conversion already done, so it came with the bell houosing and everything for 2K. Absolute bargain if you can find one already done....then swap everything and get it engineered !!

It goes really well off-road, matches nicely to the Hilux gearing, so ya don't need to give it too much right foot........BUT
It sounds really really good when you do put your foot down !!
As for the conversion, you'll need to check Marks 4WD Adapters, but I think the price is around the $1200 mark ??
I reckon you'd have more luck finding a wrecked Hilux with conversion already done for a lot cheaper....just go to the auctions

Cool, I didn't think there were that many conversions out there? Hmm..new to QLD..will have to dig around and find out where the auctions are at and go have a squiz.
Kinda like the idea of dual cases as well
SPOA and some healthy guard cutting, should be able to keep it fairly low and get 35s on it which would be my initial target. Rocky engine bay should be bigger than a feroza's as well, easier fitting etc..one thing would be the axle width. Rocky is the same as Feroza ie ~58" and hilux is 55", nothing some backspaced rims can't fix tho. Stock Rocky springs should flex very nicely in SPOA (seen zooks running them like that) and if worse comes to worse, got the yota springs to play with..

Why don't you consider the Bundy Diffs.......make it coils all round....don't have to worry 'bout leafs anymore !!
Go a 5-link front, 3-link rear......8 inch coils.....3 inch body lift.....42 Swampers

The engine would still be in an east west configuration. All they do is run a small tranfer case with a drive shaft to the rear diff out the side of the normal FWD gearbox.
I had a 4WD Laser turbo and that is how it was set up.
