Metal Military Ammo Box/Tubes/cases

Post by Santos »

I'm looking for a good place to score a lot of metal cases ex-surplus in sydney. (Quite happy to travel if there is a good range to pick from, i do not want to go places which charge $50 + for a generic sized box)

They are great sturdy boxes to hold all your gear in and are dingo proof for when i'm off to Frazer.

To keep some tech does anyone use these or have you adapted one for a special purpose (like a lockable gas stove to keep bugs off when not in use etc)

If anyone has some kind of case/box/tube kicking around to get rid of (pref free :P)post it up

Also if anyone see the style in the photo knows what it's from (which army/gun/era)

please let me know as i would like a few of these ' Waterproof' ammo tubes for various equipment that needs to stay dry as possible.

 , looks like torpedos :D , i have a big, metal chest that I picked up for free, use it everytime i go camping for storing, well, pretty much everything, weighs a tonne though :bad-words: ..., i've seen plenty of ex-army looking storage crap in junk yards, there's one just off Richmond Rd near londonderry, seen a few in there, and one in Box Hill on Old Pit Town Rd, if either of these are close enough for ya let me know and i can get better directions.

Try surplus stores, they usually have a bunch of stuff that could be useful.

Also try to get the very high density foam that the army uses for packing. I have a metal ammo box I carry with all my recovery gear in it. I cut and glued the foam in place to support my tirfor, and other items in the box. It doesnt squash down at all.

I think I got my box for free from the tip.

i was more thinking specific recommended disposals stores in sydney... a quick search on the web showed a difference of up to $20 for the same sized ammo box :D

Got my local camping store to find out about the ammo cylinder availability... i'm not so fussy about the price there.

I am keeping an eye out on garage sales but i only expect to see no more then the odd one every few weeks.

The army actually has a equipment disposal line so i will look into that on my day off (business hours only :()

i picked up an ex us navy (or coast guard) life raft case. Its made of plastic but its very strong stuff. Fully water proof. Only bitch is all the clips which hold it together, also it splits in the middle, ie: no top lid.
came fully lined with top quality foam, real thick and tough.

Aussie disposals $120.

Close. It appears to say 155mm Howitzer propellant, in which case its like a big bag of gun-powder they shove into a loading tube and the projectile gets put in front of it as the 155mm's didnt use all-in-one munitions.
