rear axel oil seals

how often do u replace them. In the 2 years iv owned my 91 soft top iv done 3 oil seals. Iv put 2 lots in myself and 1 by my machanic when i had the diff replaced 6 months ago and now there leaking again

Have a look at the sealing surface, is it pitted or is there a groove around where the seal might sit?

also how much mud do you drive in as this can affect their lifespan

the seal is not prone to mud because it sits inside the diff behind the wheel bearing, i would be checking to see how straight the axles are and the housing for starters, the seal runs on the bearing retainer that locks the bearing on to the axle, check to see if the collar is wide enough, also the wide tracks came with a spacer on the axle to space it out a bit, so check ur lenghts and see if they line up, or check were the seal has been running on the retainer to see if it has full contact. if all else fails use genuine seals.

Is it the same side? I find the long side ones are a little more difficult to get the axle back in. Maybe you're damaging the seal as you're putting the axle shaft back in.

Mind you, i've never had any problems so it can't be that hard to get it right

Looks like I have done my rear axle oil seals (both sides). There is diff oil sprayed around inside the rim and after sitting for a couple of days it is pooling in the rim. I am yet to pull the wheels off and take a look. I have never had to change these before so am looking for any advice, tips tricks etc

I have recently put in new front bearings and hub seals etc so was thinking I might as well do the rears as well so that I know both ends are at the same standard.

Is there anything else that should be done or checked whilst I am in there (I would hate to get half way through and find that an extra piddly little $5 seal etc is needed and then have to order one)?

Any part no's or recommendations or where to get a good price are also welcome.
