locker for GQ
locker for GQ
I am trying to find out what are the best diff locks to run on a GQ patrol, besides air lockers they aint in the budget.
Its a 4.2 diesel, long wheel base if that would make a difference (which i doubt)
Any help greatly appreciated

I am looking at putting in an Auto Locker in the front of mine because i too can't afford a air locker setup
Try looking for a autolocker. From what i have heard, they are torque based like a LSD. They come in when the torque hits a certain point on the wheels. so if you loose one off the ground, the torque builds up and send its into locked mode

About $500. 3 year unconditional warranty regardless installer and tyre size (something that ARB certainly dont offer).MyGQ wrote:how much for one of them?bulldogy wrote:I have the 4wd system locker in mine and for the money it performs good.

I got my Powertrax Lockright #3210 ( '93 GQ LWB front diff) locker from the US for $AU 420 delivered to my doorsteps. I didn't want to buy the Lokka from 4WD Systems as I read mixed reports about their durability. Apparently, Powertrax don't manufacture the 3210 anymore, but still have some in stock.
Jeremy from J.T.'s Differentials & Axles was very helpful in sourcing them and he really knows is stuff.
I did two trips with the lockers in and I'm very happy with their performance. You just have to get used to how they work and adjust your driving style accordingly. If installed correctly, there shouldn't be any reliability issues.
I wouldn't puth them in the rear as they are too much of a hassle on road.

look round ARB's can be had for ~$1100 + fit. I think retail on ARB is $1250, well worth the xtra $300 by a million miles.
so for 1100 i get the arb locker in a box with all the pipes bolts and switches needed.
I just have to add another few hundred for a compressor.
Instructions easy to read or just opt for professional which another few hundred then im up to bout three times price of lock rite.
Rather spend 2 grand on a skiing holiday. 420 bucks for a diff lock sounds great bang for my buck 2 me.
Gq patrol
When I was in the market, I got quotes on some of the better known auto lockers. Detroits were actually more expensive (Opposite Lock) and the good lockrites (TJM) were only a lttle bit cheaper than air lockers.
If you go with the 4wd systems lokka's and then go with 37" tyres, you'd get better value staying with 35's and putting the extra $$ into getting some air lockers
particularly on the front.
I know its boring that everyone says get air lockers, but there's a reason for it. The air system is dead set easy to set up even if you don't get the air locker compressor (why wouldn't you @ only $175). If you're serious enough to be considering 37's you should have a compressor. You can wire up an onboard air system easily and cheaply utilising the compressor you already have.
My 2c worth.

you would have rocks in your head to pay $700 for auto lockers.krimnl wrote:keep saving, and go with the air lockers
I have never met a content owner, and i know a few who have chucked them when they have shiat themselves or been such an irratation that they buy arb's. i have had lokkas myself and i wouldn't touch them or 4wd systems that i also have only heard bad about (esp delivery times and promises) as well as my own bad delivery experiances.
auto lockers on the front are so harsh - we even drove a few k's up a hill before we realised we had a flat - as the harder than normal steering seemed like normal auto locker behaviour. they are that bad.
on the rear they cause torque steer on the road and abnormal tyre wear and are a great way for others to crash your truck in the wet if they haven't driven on them before. only shit modifications to street driven forby's need learning to drive or "getting used to".
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
i bought my second set of arb's last week as i flogged my old one with my gq diffs when i went gu, didn't consider anything else (prolocker not for nissan yet)
arbs are also no harder to set up than a lokka they just take a little longer ( i have set up both a few times now) read the detailed instructions and diy it. a 2nd hand arb will fetch $7-800 a lokka like $300 max, so it is just extra money set aside not money wasted. you will not regret it
for now a mild shim of the lsd will tie you over
cheers mate

Blah blah blah I am a very happy powertrax lockright owner, have one in the front of a GQ with JT2s. Yes the steering is slightly heavier, only in 4WD, but I am always locked so I get up stuff first go without having to stop and engage the locker. If you are doing comp work then the auto has it merits but for a bush hack you can't go past a properly fitted lockright.bru21 wrote:you would have rocks in your head to pay $700 for auto lockers.krimnl wrote:keep saving, and go with the air lockers

Weekdays - Prado GXL D4D with some stuff
Weekends - Mav shorty with lots of stuff

Ive driven both. My current 4by has a AirLocker in the rear and a auto in the front. I dont mind the auto. It does the job well on slow stuff, rocks etc. I can be a little bit of a hand full in sand times...tends to snatch the steering wheel a bit.
I must say that the only reason i have the front auto, is that it came with the car. If it was my choice i would be going AirLocker all the way. My mates 4by has F & R Airlockers and it drives tricky stuff sooo much easier.
Theres nothing like being able to turn those kinda traction aids, on and off.
When the auto locker ever craps itself...ill be going straight to the ARB

From my understanding (i have air locker) this is back to front. Someone Correct Me......MyGQ wrote: From what i have heard, they are torque based like a LSD. Most mechanical lockers are actually locked all the time, front or rear, only you wont notice the front until hubs are locked. Anyway they are always locked until something (like road friction/traction whilst turning) causes one wheel to want to travel faster than the other then locker then ratchets and unlocks the wheel wanting to go faster.
Good for when a wheel is in the air for example, however, picture this. Steep loose surface decent straight down into creek line which you have to turn into and follow/drive along. You decend, locker is locked as surface is not forcing one of the wheels to go faster, then try turning but because on loose surface and not under acceleration or forced differential between wheel speeds, locker doesn't ratchet and voila no steering = plough! SPLASH!

Going out on a limb here i know. But i think im right.

On loose surface the wheels would slip i would of thought so they would stay locked in, and you could turn as one wheel is slipping......i think.
Its on the road when there is no slip that they disengage.
thanks for all the imput all

I have lock rights front and rear in the sierra, they get the job done well, steering can get heavy, although you learn to drive to suit it. Have had experience with both air and auto's, and for a cheap toy, could not justify the cost of air-lockers.
In the process of building up a GQ shorty, although a good friend has a comp ready GQ ute with auto locker front, which he is extremely pleased with, we will still most likely opt for an air locker. Just for the comfort and ease, and I have an ARB compressor and loom ready to go in it already.
