Post by toy77 »

G'day,

i have just fnished building a rack/cage for the roof of my gq patrol, and i want to put some spotties up there.

where/how do you guys run the wiring to get it up there? i am assuming somewhere it has to go from the inside to the outside.....

Cheers

I came out of the mudguard under the snorkel through and then ran the wires up behind the snorkel, tucked under.

At the top of the snorkel I put a flat trailer plug, and then attached its mate to the roofrack. The 7-wire trailer plug had enough connections for everything I wanted to do on the roof rack, and still allows the roofrack to be removed.

i wired lights to my roof rack facing bakc the other day... just got the drill out and put a hole in the fiberglass canopy and siliconed it up after the wires were in, then ran the wires threw the rack.

I ran mine through the roof lining inside. Then snuck it out under the trim around the door as close to the 'B' pillar as poss then up the rack to the lights.

Through the rear air vent on the back pillar on an 80 series... Pulled the plastic trim right off, neatly drilled holes so we could cable tie the cable in split conduit and ran it up to the gutter and onto the rack leg.

Have also seen the older style round 5/7 pin trailer sockets mounted onto the roof with a plug.
Cheers,
Dan.

If your going to keep the car for a while, then drill a hole through the roof and put a rubber grommet in it so water and the likes cant get through. Then run the wiring through the grommet. When you go to sell the car, take it to a panel beater and get them to weld it over and paint match that area.

Otherwise all the other ideas are worth the effort :D

Hoonz, do you find that the conduit catches on overhanging branches/trees?

nah i hasn't caught on anything yet i'm gonna change it so the wiring goes up through the bottom of the rack instead of in through the end
