easy engine swaps..

Post by drifta »

I've been thinking about the future of my sierra and it seems that the suzuki swift GTi engine would be a good choice if I want to swap later on, I was also considering the 4agze but it will most likely be alot more work and require other parts of the car to be strengthened accordingly..

I'm not exactly sure why greg went for the turbo cappacino engine over the GTi engine because the GTi engines would be readily available as halfcuts too wouldnt they?? perhaps it was just the lure of a turbo =)

anyway if anyone has any other ideas as to easy engine swaps for a sierra, please post it here..

by the way, I am aware of the 1.6 bottom end swap, but would rather get away from carbies.. the 16v 1.6 seems hard to get hold of ( I called one engine place and i think he laughed at me hehehe )

I was also thinking the v6 from a toyota surf/4runner might be a nice option [not a huge capacity so should be good on economy compared to a commodore v6 while also being built for 4x4] although if i was going to goto the effort of putting an engine like a v6 in I'd rather put the 4agze in anyhow..

Hi Drifta,

This is a similar investigation to what i did recently.

Here were my criteria for the new engine:
1. Must be as powerful / "torquie" as the 1.3 that i had
2. Must be attainable
3. Must be light weight (the whole car is being built to be light)
4. Must have EFI - i run a lot of side angles and flooding the carby is annoying.

I too was after an EFI Vitara Engine but they are very uncommon as everyone else wants them too.

Apparently the GTI Swift engine has a few issues with possitioning of the Dizzy - i think you need to get an adaptor plate which i hear is up to a thousand bucks to do. (don't quote me on that, check it out a bit further).

I chose the Cappuccino engine because it met all of those above listed requirements and was slightly cheaper (maybe not now though).

The motor from the Cap is an F6A (K6A in later models) which is the same engine that you can buy in a Sierra in Japan (called a Jimny), so it's not a very big step to think that we could fit the motor into my sierra really.

Hope that helps clear things up.

Cheers,
Greg

DRIFTA = check with suzukishop in cannington as he is now running his sierra with the 1.6 bottom end and the 1.3 gti topend. He used to run the whole 1.3 gti combo.

cheers

Oh yeah, that reminds me... I asked a local Suzuki place down here about getting a 1.6 bottom end to plug into my existing 1.3 head and was quoted 3,000 for it. That's another reason why i didn't take that option.

I hope that included all the parts, labour, and free blow jobs for a couple of months. Jesus, that's rediculously expensive.

how viable is putting an EFI turbo onto a G13A?
what about just EFI onto G13A?

i know putting a turbo onto a GTI 1.3 is quite common and effective - so it's all possible right?

Yeah that was installed with the whole "drive in and drive away" gimic thing. But as i stated earlier, without the EFI etc, i didn't consider it to be an upgrade worth making.

I'll enquire about the extra services next time i need some parts for the car if you like ;)

Definately any sort of 4AGE whether it be the standard, 20v or ZE, would be quperior to a suzuki conversion. I have had th 86kw engine in my car for the past 11 years while a friend has gone through numerous suzuki motors (GTi swift then a supercharged 1.3) to try and keep up with my car & he's finally putting a 20v in it. The toyo conversion is initially dearer, but it will save you money in the end. Despite what others have posted in other threads, the 4A's have heaps of torque from anywhere in the rev range, & I 4b with about 4 other zooks with some sort of 4A in it.

I have had the REAL PLEASURE of driving Andys spook on the gold coast with the standard 4AGE in it. The thing has heaps of power and torque.

I helped him move house a while back and was towing a huge trailer fully loaded with the zook and it did it without any dramas. If I were to do a swap that would be the engine I get.

He also has access to a conversion kit, not sure if he makes it or purchases it off someone else. But I could find out for anyone interested.

When I got my 1.6 bottom end when I owned serria I got mine from a local wrecker the vitara had a hit in the back end hard and was a right off but the engine was fine apart from blowing smoke so I rebuilt it anyway. So I asked what it cost me ( they did all the work) $350.

Is the 4AGE the 2wd engine? Or is a 4wd version needed? (if there is one)

It's from the 2wd corollas, MR2 et al, but the easiest motor to use is the rear wheel drive ones.

Also, with regards to drifta's initial inquiry, chad has only strenghtened the diff housings, otherwise everything that is suzuki in the car (& that is basically all running gear except engine & gearbox) is standard. We have not broken anything yet. I suspect we shall start to do so soon though due to age rather than not being strong enough. BUT then again I don't do the rock crawling stuff in my car. If you can't do it at full throttle then you just find a way around it that you can.

Scary

Post by ob4speedracer »

Hi i'm new to this game. I have a 90 model Serria. Had a 1.3 Suzuki motor in it typical suzuki piece of crap carbies to not idle properly, stall on hills etc. So after 2000 k's of driving the engine swap came around still in progress of plumbing it, a 4AGE, T25 turbo, intercooled. was purchased from a rear wheel drive Celica hoping from all the talk on 4AGE's this one might get up an boogie. Going to run the standard computer with a hobb switch and extra injector to try and stop the lean out on boost, i'm quite sure ho much boost it will run, going to experiement with around 15 -20 pound boost.

What is the weight of a 4AGE motor and box.

We just finished installing an Isuzu 1.8lt Diesel into an orginal 1ltr Sierra.

Motor came out of a Gemini complete with 5sp manual. Heaps of torque right from idle. Actually in low first who has to accelerate to make this thing move. Flooding the carb is a thing of the past cause this thing will run on any angle as long as it has fuel and air.

This thing is happy onroad and will happily do 100km\h and is right at home offroad.

Food for thought. But as all things it is a heavy motor hence my first question, Whats the weight???

on a side note it was also able to tow a Suzuki Vitara LWB home after a boghole mishap without a drama. Towing wasn't fast at around 50Km average but consistent for the 40 kays it took to get this Vitare home. Plenty of power in the little deisel.

cheers

in regards to the G13B (gti engine), the dizzy does pose a problem of clearance. I know a guy in Newcastle who has done 5 of these conversions and a assures me that all that needs be done is that the firewall be massaged in a touch.

Most of the good Celica engines never came out here - we got lumped with the same engines that were in the Corona and Camry of the same era.

Hence the reason why Celica's have a reputation as a "Hairdresser's car".

I was considering the 2.4 Super Responsive Corona motor (1985/86 Coronas).

Rear wheel drive, 4 cylinders and of course a 50% capacity increase......

ANyone know what the Engine model number is so I can find specs?
