Reduction gears

Post by JayCee83 »

I know this has been gone over so many times BUT I am looking for gear with around 80% reduction in L/range - calmini sells then for US$450 (AU$600 approx), BBM does not do the series #1 anymore :bad-words: and abt4x4.com has calmini gears for $1,150.

Alot of people are saying on the web to just go for series #3 rockhoppers but i am only running 31" and i think that will be way too low. Correct me if i am wrong :?:

Please help and suggest any opinions - greatly appreciate it - need the gears soon, sick of stuffing my clutch

Try to find a friend with r3 gearing, bolt ya 31's on , and try it.
All the mathematics and paper work can't replace suck it and see.
For example, I worked out I needed 4:6 diffs, and accidently bought 4:9's, and it worked out great...its all a gamble and trial error, sooner or later it'll be cheaper to grab some gearing than replace clutches...
Rock hopper brand gears for S1 seem to break a lot.

Would love to but at the moment i dont know anyone with series 3, they all drove hiluxs.
you may have a 1.0l is that right?
It is a 1.3lt, the bullbar is just there to hide the exposed radiator due to 2" body lift. Saving up money to made custom one :D Its a 91 model. I havn't done much in it so far but enough not know that i need gears. Go to the parks heaps and love rocks  Eventually will enter minor comps.

I'm thinking (and that's all it is, a thought) that the Calmini's 5.14:1 set could be the G O for you! There has been times where I have found 4.16:1 still isn't low enough in both high and low on 31s.

I have just put S3 (well apparently they are S3's..bought em second hand..Im still not convinced that they arent only S1 after watching someone with calmini 5.14's on the weekend) in my zook and I run standard NT 3.9 diff ratios and 29's. It is great in low as I can take off fairly easily in 5th and 1st is crawl. Drive most things in 2nd or 3rd but it works great!!! Only problem is on the road.. @ 60km/h it sits at 3000rpm in 4th and at 100km/h (real speeds not speedo reading) it sits at about 4000rpm or more. To get gearing back to normal in high I have figured out I would need 31's and WT 3.7 ratios. BTW can I put WT centres into NT if I swap the flange on the driveshaft...I no you can def do NT in WT...sorry for the highjack. Anyway I reckon if mine truely are S3 then you on ur 31's should be exactly right for highway driving and would have an awesome and useable low range!

I run 31 mtr's on the road and 32 tsl/sx off road on my zook with calmini 5.14's, and am happy with the ratios (using WT diffs with stock ring and pinion). Used to have s1 till i grenaded them, and noticed that sometimes a lower ratio would have been better. Apart from RBZOOK filling my transfer with mud at nissan trials, have had no problem with the calmini's. Even with series 3 gears, you can always just go up a gear in the gearbox if you dont have enough wheel speed. Thats what the gear box is for ;) Though mine still is a bit revvy for highway use, but to push bigger tyres at highway speed in a car with the aerodynamics of a brick you need to make the engine work anyway.

Lay80n What size tyres did you use with the S1 and stock diff ratio???

I ask because I have heard people saying that 29´s get you back to stock, but other people say 30's and some other 31's. I don't have a load of money to try all them. So I ask the same question once more.

Thanks.

I am correct to say that the series 1's only change the low range and leave high range unchanged?

i run 31's and it is a 1lt zook i need to also change my gear ratios but you can only get a series 1 for the 1lt transfer, is there any thing i can do to change the high range ratios by about 12%.

Cheers
Simon..

Providing you have the correct transfer case ie. 1.0l series II on (8/83+ w/4WD light switch) you can fit most reduction gear sets. You are right that a 4.16:1 gear set will not change your high range ratio as this gear set utilises the 1.0l input. Only the gear sets with a lower ratio than 4.16:1 will change your high range eg Calmini's 5.14:1 will reduce your high range by about 6% and a 6.4:1 by about 10%.

So where would i start to look for the set to suit the 1lt transfer case?
Do i just buy the one to suit the 1.3 and not install the input shaft?

Cheers

I used to run Series 1s with 31s and always felt that they were only JUST low enough. In Tassie we obviously get a lot of goopy mud and 2nd. was the go with Series 1s for most holes, but, when you needed a bit more reduction--1st. was all revs. and no go! I now run Calmini 5.14s with 32s and have to say that it is just perfect. 3rd. will carry me through most of the sloppy stuff and reaching for 2nd. still gives a heap more urge. Low low feels just right for the rocks-- without the risk of bustin' Birfields on full lock! On the road it is as close to standard gearing (assuming standard tyres) as you could want. For the conditions I operate in I could not be happier--but hey, horses for courses eh?

Its my understanding that the importer of these gears has been stuffing people around for months saying that they will be here soon, or next week and other crap like that.

Are there actually any series 4's in OZ yet?

I was running 31 MTR's or 31 BFG muddies with the series 1's. From memory rock hopper series 1 lower the high range 12%, and low range 83%. Calmini 5.14 lower high range 18% and low 127% or something like that.
