Hi All, I have a just a stock standard BJ40 (at the moment). I was just wondering what everyone thinks are "must do" mods. I don't want to turn my 40 into a comp truck, but I do want to turn it into a more than capable 4x4. I was thinking of starting with a SPOA conversion. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

The springover is a cheap, effective suspension mod, if you do it yourself! It will cost an arm and a leg to get it done professionally. Just warning you :D
Once the SOA is done definitely go some 35s and a locker or two if your budget is big enough. I also found that chopping your rear guards prevent tyre scrub under compression.

Some sliders, winch, etc etc are all good mods aswell. Go wheeling and see what mods you think need. The beauty with 40s is that pretty much every mod you can think of can be booty fabbed in the garage.

Is the springover hard thing to DIY?

mate if your going spoa, do 60 diffs and shackle reversal at the same time.
is it daily driver??
if not a cheap locker is very useful.

As long as you are handy with the welder and dont mind doing lots of measuring then a springover is fairly straightforward. You will need certain thing like a double arm or hi-steer arms as well as new perches, extended brakelines and plenty of patience. The first time you do a SOA is the hardest.
If you can, I would definitely go 60 series diffs although this does require some extra fab work and may not be necessary if you arent going to go too hardcore. I only have standard diff and have never had any dramas with them.

geven you need to weld the spring mounts on the top of the diff any way, no more work to spa a 60 diff in it, as said a shackle reversal will help as well. you should think about a cut and rotate on the front diff at the same time to correct castor and the pinion angle. plenty of good tech on how to cut and rotate and soa

You can turn a forty into a really tuff offroad vechile without spending the big bucks.
Extended shackles bout on the rear (Two bit of 12mm plate and four bolts)
Drop a leaf out of both front and rear springs.
Weld The rear diff (poor mans locker)
already you have a really capable vechile for about $50
decent set of tyres and you in buisness.
Mates got a fJ40 we have worked wonderers on it (search MECHMAN)

why not go whole hog and fit a set of coils n coiled diffs under it and get the flex with a comfortable ride of coils

My 40 is 1979 model... and how hard is it to coils and coil diffs into my 40? Also thanks for the help, all this is helping me out heaps.

MR Forty,
glad to see you are beefing up a classic :D . I have just started a 79 forty swb am going a little more extreme by putting a quad cam lexus v8 in it. if there is any one out there who could give me a heads up on where to start would very much appreciate it.
