It could be tappets, My Surf does the same thing, or only with fresh oil for the first 1500k's on fresh oil then the noise dissapears, haven't attempted adjusting the valves on them, don't think they are adjustable on mine ?

Mine has a ticking audible around the same range and it comes from the wax pellet device (ASCD = Assisted Cold Start Device?) on the fuel pump. The sound disappears when the lever is forced forward off the plunger on the device. Been meaning to fix it, but too lazy

where is it on the pump (ACSD) is it more of a rattle? Mine makes a rythmic tapping noise not so much a rattle, wondering if it might be just piston slap

The ACSD is the device that has a coolant line going in and out of the back. The plunger presses on a spring loaded arm to the side opposite from the engine. The noise on mine is a rhythmic tapping as well.

Could this be the pump or timimg? any ideas diesel gurus
I think you hit it in one...have the timing checked by someone with a diesel timing light....it will probably be too advanced.

My 1HD-FT had a ticking noise for a while then I broke a rocker bridge and bent a valve which the piston hit... cost me a rebuild... make sure you get the tappets adjusted... i think my engine failed because of worn collets tho.
