safari snorkel-head slips off??
G'day,
Just got a new Safari snorkel from arb fitted,
was wondering why the heck i can pull off the head.??
the clamp is dun up , but you can slip on and off..
Not real happy about it,
when they cost $100 to replace if someone want one more than me..
any one out there with same prob???
i though with all that $$$ they would have a rim to stop it slipping off??
cheers

G'day mate, i work at ARB Southside normally the heads are ok. u can turn them if u put enough force into it, but cant take it off. Who installed it? which ARB? u can try loosen the clamp and push the clamp on as far down the neck (all the way down near those rib things) and do it up as tight as possible BUT dont strip the clamp! ull b able to tell when its about to strip. Then you should be able to just move it side to side using 2 hands. If that dont work obviously the clamp is buggered!

Yer , ARB wollongong, south coast 4wd centre, installed it,
was happy with them on my mates trucks,
but,not sure what happened on mine....
had the windows tinted 3hrs before snorkel fitted...tape and all, and the idiot f#*ked the window tint,by winding it down,
i think tek screw might be the go.
they also bubbled the guard...so im not real keen to go back..
with the tek screw would a neo washer on it help?

on Cruiser utes, when we change the factory head to the Safari head we put a self tapping screw in the head, thats probly the best way to go. well thats interesting to hear about wollongong, south coast 4wd centre. Cause at Southside if there is a grease mark on the car when its finished we get our arses kicked, which i spose is a good thing! So yeah to solve all ya probs quick and easy throw a text screw or 2 in it.

mate if i shelled out the hard earned fora job like that id be taking it back off myself and jamming the end of it up the fitters arse. dont stick a tek in it you will void any warranty on workmanship or parts. id be hitting em up for the tint too . thats just not good enough from suposed profesionals.try taking it to nother arb installer and tell them the story anyone worth a pinch will fix it for you if they dont then let everyone on here know so we dont go there either.cheers muds
Muddy80s, If u stuck it up a fitters arse i think ud have a little more to worry about than a Snorkel head. its not always the fitters fault so u can forget that ignorant way of thinking, If the clamp is tight theres not much more the fitter can do about it, the Foreman and salesman all have to approve of the standard of work b4 it leaves the workshop! so if your gonna Ram the snorkel head up the fitters arse spend another $90 a pop for another head and stick it up the workshop foreman and salesmans arse, better yet go to Safari, ram one up all their arses for making a sh*t clamp or head design. If you wanna go about it like that you better shove one up your own arse 4 not installing it yourself and saving $120 or what ever they charge, at least that way ull know u did it right!
Sorry, but it pisses me off when people are so quick to blame the poor bugger trying to do his job, and if it was the fitters fault for not doing it up properly or if they buggered the clamp sh*t happens, take it back, they fix it, End of the day life goes on!

i wont get roped into your little game but heres how i see it. if i do a shit job at my place of work id be rapped over the knuckles for it. the person doing the job is responsible for the job being done right.i did my own on my car and yes its done properly with no probs but obviously a fitter who puts the head on and deosnt notice a problem like that or deosnt give a crap deosnt deserve to work on other peoples cars and therefore everyone should know where hes working before they to are put through the same experience. ive had many times of dumb arse so called qualified mechanics doing work on mine and freinds/families cars and leaving important items off like ball joint nuts ect so if we nut out the backyard bodjys we will all get what we pay for eh. its not about being a smartarse its about the fact that we are in a sport which envolves lots of money and certain extremes of danger and if you put your faith in someone whos charging you good money you should get a good job done.ok
On ya Muddy80s,
i hear both pionts, But have to agree,
im an civil engineer , and if i f&k up a schedule for a reinforcment pour, for a M7 highway bridge or levels on a City hotel,
i will get more than rapped knuckel,
my manager and factory team will also get hammad, but as a company, we will have to pay back charges.
3 screw ups and im out...no room for any misstakes...
wether it be , a million$$ bridge construction,employing 300 people,
or fitting a $512 snorkel to my truck.
all the same in the end.....Respect , take pride in your work...or get a new job...
sorry if this pisses any one off.. but i dont care who's too blame,,,
what done is done....i will not go back there.
And i agree, we need to weed out the site.As it is an expensive sport, and no room for errors.
Cheers

C'mon guys. The fitter is just that. He FITs stuff. The snorkle should be designed in such a manner that you don't need to screw the clamp up with a pry bar. It's only plastic after all.
It's obviously a DESIGN fault. If the thing is SUPPOSED to have a screw and the fitter left it out, OK it's his fault. In this case it just sounds like a dodgy item.
I have a cheap no-name snorkel and the head has a groove formed into it to fit over a ridge on the main body section. With the clamp loose you can spin the head around, but you can't lift it off until the clamp is completely loose. When you place the head on the body you need to push it down so it 'snaps' into place.
If yoyu take your Falcadore to Fordens for a leaky power steering pump and the fitter sticks a new factory item in and it leaks a year later, it's a DESIGN fault, not the fitters fault (isn't it ?)

If this ARB store is half decent they should be more then happy to fix it as long as it hasnt been damaged since it left the workshop. Keep us posted on what the outcome is.
Couldnt agree with you more beatle_bayly and Shadow. Fitters just do what the instruction sheet tells us to do, whether we have fitted the same product 100 times we always refer to the instructions when installing! So if the clamp on your snorkel head is tight, then like i said stick the snorkel head up Safari's @r$e, not the fitters!!!!!!

Guys,
I didnt start this to bag the store or the fitters,
I agree with boths points either side has,
With the head slipping off, i can understand the last point, saying the item design maybe a prob, and my prob with this is, ARB is well respected company down here,i would have thought if it was a continues fault, enough complaints from the company buy the fitter's and the customers, would be enough for a design change or a update note added.
The fitter in this case but, scratched the brand new(wet tint) and bubbles in the paint around the hole, along with doggy white paint to cover it up...that looks like liquid paper.
Enough baggin.. i will ring the tomorrow some time.and end these probs...
Really i just wanted to know if anyone else had the same dramas with the head
Cheers

About the tinting and the paint, im gathering there would have been some sort of msg passed to the fitter that the tinting is only a few hours old? if so make them replace it! and for the paint make them touch it up with paint of the same colour code! It does take a bit of common sense to be a fitter but its not rocket science and if it wasnt an accident then surely get his arse kicked!!!!!

to all who help with the posting, cheers.
Just letting you know the guys @ ARB were good about it, no probs, they needed to replace the guard, paint and fit, + redo tint and fix snorkel..clamp was up the shit.
also, the poor fitter was releaved of his job...i wasnt happy about that.I dont think he was @ fault, i just think managment was shifting the blame,
but they informed me ,that it wasnt his first time...cost of exercise+$1200.
still i cant understand after year of evolution, why Safari, didnt put a bloody lip on it!
Cheers all.
