MIGHTY MIDDY CRUISER'S rear diff is totally RAT SH1T

Post by MUSS »

:x :bad-words: the middy's rear diff is clunking when rolling and howlin at speed ive chatted to bj bout it and he said to remove rear tail shaft and just drive round in H4..... but its still makin that bastard nazi noise!!!! i have looked at it and recon (sos a mate or 2) it is the pinion bearing and crush washer (i hope ) cos when i took off the rear tall shaft the nut has finger tight so we tried to torque it back up but i recon weve done more harm then good  bloody back yard wanna bes  any one got any ideas to temporarily fix it as im getting a full rear diff bj iin about 2 to 3 weeks at the most

I think BJ forgot to mention for you too pull the rear axles out as well. First drain the oil from the diff or it will leak everywhere. Stick some rag in the axle holes and you will be able to drive it in H4 and the rear diff will be quiet. But this is only a short term fix and i realy wouldnt advise driving it around too much because the car will react differently to normal. Personaly i would only do this to get me home.

Not if you pull the axles. The centre will only be along for the ride.

if the pinion nut is loose then you were close to dropping the entire lot, the pinion goes down the gear and bang... then it all binds up....

Yeah i said to pull the axles.... You can even pull the centre  Its a full floater, it needs NOTHING but the hubs, or you could pull the centre, send it away to get fixed and run about on the front. As Ruff said it is a very temporary solution, as the car will handle like a lifted front wheel drive (torque steer?) and may wear your CVs a little quicker...........
