Hilux Frond end swivel hub replacement- HELP!

Hey all my 89 lux has been making a whole lot of noise from the front end lately when driving so think my wheel bearings are knackered. I'm runnning 33's so more than likely. However if im going to replace the wheel bearing i may aswell replace the swivel hub seals as there leaking bigtime aswell. Plus to top it off my brakes need doing as the rotors need replacing anyway.

ok the problem is, i have not done this job before and have no idea what i'm doing.. has any1 got any good sites for DIY guides etc for this job?

Now for all the critics saying it is such a hard job n that you need a mechanic to do it.. I'm WAY to poor to pay some1 for their labour and have an abundance of time as i'm on uni holidays so I would rather learn how to do it. kapeech?

It's not a hard job and you don't need to be a mechanic to do it...

Swivel hub seals are fairly easy, just time consuming the first time. Take everything apart and basically put it back the way you found it, Im assuming that you will be doing the bearings on your swivels hubs too, if so be sure to leave the camber adjusting plates? (small peices of sheet metal ontop and below of the swivel hub) in the same order as you take them out.

Seals are the same principle, remove all the bolts and take the seals off, replace them so that the new ones go back in the same order, steel then rubber then felt from memory.

Its not hard job, just a dirty job.
Just do 1 side at a time, that way if u forget how something goes back together u can just look at the other side.
You will need 1 whole bed sheet riped up into small rags to do the job.

don't try to short cut anything, it's quicker to pull the whole thing to bits, start at the hub, make sure you leave he nuts on the ends of the threads when you tap the side of the hub assembly to get the cone washers out otherwise they will go flying across the room, if they don't take your eye out in the process.
Some people just drop the whole disc, hub etc off in one hit, but if i were you i'd spend the time to take it all apart, clean it, re grease or replace the wheel bearings while you're there.

Once the swivel hub is off, you knock the bearing cups out from on top (for the lower one) and from the bottom (for the top one)

That's how i do it anyway, when you have to often replace broken CV's, you can get the replacements done in around 1/2hour. Ive seen it done in a dry creekbed in 15 mins. :shock: So it's not a hard jod to do, just very messy, CV Grease sux.

well started the job today, yeh its relatively easy, but my gawd is it messy!!! Pulled apart the passenger side completly changed the pads while i had the caliper off and put a new rotor on. Just waiting on the stupid swivel hub kit that was suppose to be here yesterday!! so can't really do to much more until i've got that. even managed to get the circlip off without using circlip pliers.. :-)

theres a brass bush on the inside of the hub which will need replacing if flogged out. not part of the seal kit but can be sourced through toyota. around $60 each but worth it if you want the seals to last.
84 d/cab hilux ...... a work in progress.
just not much progress at the moment !?!
