Yet another 3.0 TD Hilux bites the dust
Just been advised that a second of our company 2005 turbo diesel Hiluxes has blown an engine. This is the second one in two weeks. The first had 13,000kms on it and this one has done 16,000 kms. Still waiting on the verdict and will advise outcome.

This is not legal advice.
yeh the cars these days don't seem to last, saying that the 80 series td used to drop bearings before 100,000 k's . i know of a 3.0 patrol that went in for a 130,000 motor replacement then 980 k's after it came back it died again then nissan rang and told him nope not ready yet we put in the wrong crank !!!!!!! un fu**en believable.

Who by?
What oil was used?
Any problems - difficult starting, rough idling, excess smoke - before they blew?
What are 'yota doing about it? Did they say "thats the first one we've seen" to you, twice?

Usual sort of stuff people want to know when 2 new low km motors go bang.

these are the important fact to get right early on, as was the case with the ZD30, mine went bang nearly 3 years ago now.
if they are going to start to all do it, like the patrols did then it helps to build cases with Toyota if we are all on the same page.

The 10/05 3.0td lux at my second job has just spat the motor recently.
Apparently there was no warning during driving, just boooooosht and lots of white smoke comming from exhaust. Toyota has described the event as "a catastrophic failure of piston skirt area leading to significant and non reparable cylinder damage". It has done 17,700 and was serviced every 5k by Toyota as per lease arrangements. A replacemnt motor is on its way under warranty, but has been off the road now for 11 business days.
The 3l td Navara is slightly less comfy 3 months older has 8k more on the engine but is going. Triton is similar to Navara, and the MBZ Vito (we call it the bang bus from one guys NYE adventures) has just hit 900,800 in 5 years - serviced every 20,000 kms, its a 2l CRDi turbo motor. No oil change in between standard service intervals.

i told a mate about the hilux tubs hitting the cab if used as a 4by--first mistake.he told me about some service company that had a 2.8 hilux under ground at the gold mine where he works.the day came where they thought lets replace it with a new one and it only got to 3 months before it popped unlike the old girl that was there for 5 years or so.story ends by old lux got respray and put back down the hole and the new one dragged back up in shame and is still sitting in company car park for the last 2 months.dont care what any one says if you think new stuff is alright your as soft as the vehicles are.................
This doesen't sound good at all,
All I can say is I have yet to see a blown apart TD5, even ones with 250k on the clock and big ECU chip upgrades (150Kw/ 450Nm) are still going hard, not bad for a 2.5 litre engine dragging around a 2.5ton 130 Defender...
I hope this isn't a trend among the modern jap diesels, I have a 430,000km old Isuzu 4BD1 in my Rangie, I turboed it at 410,000km and the head has never been off...Still uses 1litre of oil in 10,000km and starts without glowing.
Hope all gets resolved ASAP with the appropriate help from the parent companies involved!

The new hilux D4D is a very highly strung motor.
Variable turbo common rail etc.
Had dealings with them when I was in Thailand where they are made.
They have very good power and economy for what they are.
Thailand had the D4D motor back in 1995.(2.5L and 3.0L)
It always amazed me why Toyota Australia didn't push for these engines.
I think still now the Prado is still using the 1KZ-TE.
Now I guess I can see why it took so long for Australia to see these engines.
Mabey they are still not that flash.
Cheers

Australia couldn't get these engines any earlier because our Diesel quality was too crap. It's getting better, but sulphur content is still above that of some other countries.Hales231271 wrote:The new hilux D4D is a very highly strung motor.

Sulphur helps lubricate the injector pump and injector components. All the ULSD (ultra low sulphur diesel) in europe has to have 5% biodiesel content (made from new rapeseed/canola oil) to increase the lubricity to an acceptable level.NJ SWB wrote:Australia couldn't get these engines any earlier because our Diesel quality was too crap. In worldwide diesel testing a few years back, the US, Canada and Switzerland had the worst diesel lubricity. I don't think australian diesel is to bad by world standards.
