Just got home and am totally shagged.
One bad roll over (everyone ok).
A very bad head on before the event (on a bend) - everyone ok.
Smithy blew his rear diff and had to finish early.
Quite a few cars pulled out after stage 3.
60 cars all up - 4 stages.
It started raining Saturday and made things very interesting - almost put the Jabber over going down a slippery clay hill (rear overtook the front) after a big comp GU flopped down there.
Kris and I had a ball and wasted almost a quarter of a tank of fuel at the end of the last stage fanging around
I think Hottie and Dave did ok.
Great event but the navigation was a REAL bitch.
Andrew, I forgot how good some of the tracks are down there (particularly after rain) - we have to organize a weekender

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
that was an awesome event
Even though i completely stuffed up quite a few bits, the driving thou was awesome, deep creek 1. its cool
The rain made tracks so much fun, that did mean i had to think abit more about wheel placement so i didn't slide sideways but otherwise made it better.
Very impressed with my car, over the event, didn't even think about breaking or getting stuck
Now to bed i go finally sleep

Finally just walked in the door
Was a tough event and you really needed to make some smart decisions to make the section cut off times.
Section 1 - We were car 48 and after plotting the first half an hour of the stage cleared away from the start to get the jump on a fair few vehicles. Pushed fairly hard for the entire stage, seemed to find everything we needed to, were the 4th car through the novelty excercise (2nd fastest to take tyre off and roll around car I think) and still only got into 1/4 way with 15 mins to spare. Many teams had to cut and run as they just ran out of time.
Section 2 - Once again pushed fairly hard due to how tight the time was on the first section, found most questions etc, did ok on the fire extinguisher novelty (38 secs) and reversed into the final checkpoint as req'd 13th car in at this stage.
Nav Test - Don't think we did real good. There was about 20 odd questions, most asking for meanings of terms, fairly confident with about 10 answers, 50/50 with 6 answers and didn't have clue about 4 of them! Was told by another competitor that most answers could be found in Robert Pepper's book, if you had it
Section 3 - Notes were changed at the last minute to account for wet conditions by removing Trig, Fultons and Pheasant Tracks I think. Took a while to get your head around the plotting and decided to plot entire stage before leaving Merringtons. Stage was going well until I stuffed a plot by putting in a wrong bearing and we ended up missing a checkpoint, the novelty and some questions Arrived at 3/4 way at 1:20 am and had to wake up officials to check us in
Section 4 - Notes again altered to remove Deep Creek 4. Not too bad to plot and we once again pushed hard in case of unforseen delays. Saw no cars for entire stage, besides when we came back through 3/4 way the second time, due to our stuff up on section 3 Failed the snatch strap novelty , found some questions, decided to miss a loop in favour of making our section cut off time, found the secret checkpoint and got in with 15 mins to spare at 7:05am with our hazards flashing
We were 1st car back who attempted all 4 sections even though this counts for nothing
Was hoping due to the fact we made all our section cut off times and found as much as we could in the alloted times we might end up placing ok due to other teams missing the cut off times. But have heard they cancelled half of the last section which means most would have made the section cut off time and not lost many points and we pushed hard, as did others, in section 4 for no reason
Typically its a navigational event and not a race but this year we had to push hard the whole time to have a chance at making the cut off times.
All in all a good challenging event especially some of the navigation
Goodluck to all at presentation, think we'll be watching on from mid field somewhere

Hey Hey.. was a pisser. Good navigation. Last stage a tad disappointing. They removed fultons from the route but didn't tell the first ten or fifteen cars. We found out from another competitor! the route notes were somewhat ambiguous to.
Busted a CV in the first section. SPECIAL THANKS TO NEIL COOPER for lending me a driveshaft. Oh and to CHRIS FROM KJ's OFF ROAD CENTRE for loaning me some tools!
Had to cut and run the end of the first section due to time lost changing it. Apart from that all was good. well done guys to organisers and other competitors!

You still get points for the secret checkpoint. It was only np 4.04 and np4.05 that were deleted and the relevant questions inbetween those points 'apparently'.
I tried to confirm this but could not get a straight answer from the people at any of the check points!!
When we arrived at the finish the marshals said we only needed to get two checkpoints marked off on the sheet.. I HOPE they were right.
Not that we have a chance of winning but for some it would make a difference.
Still a good event though.
However i do think that the checkpoints have diminished in both quality and numbers since the last paj i done in 2002.

Was a blast!!!!
just wish we got to do the night stages
Having some strange noises all day Saturday, I had the rear diff fail as I left camp for stage 3. I think most people who were in camp would have herd it
A big thanks to Niel Cooper and Chris Hummer.
They escorted me back to Niel's place to leave my car for repairs and Chris dropped my wife and myself home.
Its this sort of support from other compeditors that make the events!

I had a great time at the event, navigation was challenging and the tracks were good, we got all the questions and found all secret checkpoints bar the first, hopefully our answers are correct after getting home and going to sleep, i was in hibernation for something like 18 hours. I think we should go alright but i guess we will see in a little over 1 week.
the car worked great and i only had 1 electical drama which took us about 5 mins to fix. oh and the amount of oil that was burnt, some might know of the smoke omitting from the exhaust.

Have to agree with all above tracks were good, rain made it interesting. Stage 3 nav notes were a bitch. Dont know where we will finish up, from discussions nearly everyone i spoke to stufed something up so we could place anywhere. Well done to everyone that finished.
Can someone tell me when and where the presentation is going to be held, dont know what happened to all my notes, i assume they are as we were through most of the comp LOST !!!

Well we suck.
WE went from a good confident finish last year to a would be nice if we make the top 50 finish this year.
We had trouble ploting the first stage until we worked out whats was going then all was good except we ran out of time (should have cut and ran but forgot).
Stage 2, we made one big nav stuff up, while trying to get in front of Andrew. But then about 5 cars followed us up the wrong track.
After getting ourselves back on track. we drove the next track up to the MT Selma track. Then it started to rain. Which is fine for 80% of the field on swampers/simex and the other 15% on muddies. But we had well abused AT's. So this slowed our forward travel down to allot of 1st gear low. To prevent slipping as much as possible. Then it was rev limiter to get up the other side.
SO once we got to CP2.01. There where heaps of cars waiting had to wait ages. So while we did the task in the wet and dark(which I stuffed up cos it was to slippery). We made some track selection changes. AS time was running out. So we went and got the spot the differences (glad Paul brought his HID bike light) and then the Toombon mine Q's. Then it was a fast as safe back to camp. Just in time. This seemed better than skipping these two and getting the Question as we came down Old Bridle tk. Which would have been dangerous in the Paj.
Then as per usual did the Nav test. Which I think we did allright in. Then off to the food tent for a good BBQ tea.
Stage 3
The plotting was has hard as usual, always will be with Rob Pepper doing it. But once it was done. I think we did a good job at the Navigating. No real issues except for the Cherry trees look out NP. Once sorted we came into the SCP no worrys (we want get the bonous points on this, as I sucked at putting the correct block in the correct hole).
Then it was a nice fast easy run to the end off the stage. Which seemed in caos. there where some major parking issues. But the big cuppa coffe was a welcome.
Stage 4
plaotting wasnt to bad think we got most of it done noworrys. NP4.05 (which later got deleted) cuased head achs for our crew, but I just thought ok theres a loop).
Anyway the driving was good was bit worry'd about the rain though and having to drive some deep creek sections.
The first section of Deep Creek 5 was alright we skidded abit but very slow going. Then after the intersection of DC 2, things got hard. The exit of the creek toook 2 goes and the first had the front wheel at about head hieght off the ground. And the oppissite rear wasnt on the ground either. So wasnt the best posistion to be in. But after backing up slowly and a slightly better line we got up. Things where good then until we made the decision to skip the top end of DC2 as we went by the main road as it was faster and we where worryd abotu the rain and the steep sections on DC2. This caused us to enter the CP the wrong way. Mind you we will argue it. AS the instructions say go the shortest way (oh and I thought it was supposed to be on deepcreek 3). Well we overtook about a dozen cars here (and they where fast cars) so we did go the shortest (time) way.
Here we where told the loop had been taken out. Which we thought was good as I was pretty sure this would have been a hard section for us to drive safely (we had to drive it as the bullbar had not been fitted properly so couldnt use the winch (this was done by a shop no us)).
WE found the next SCP then went for a great drive up S track. That is a hard track in the Paj. But we made it.
even though we did have a nav error we answerd all the questions that we had to. So am confident we did well on this stage.
Overall it was another good comp, I just think we did badly at it. Pretty well organises again.
Just some things though. We had the least capable car (Pajero on AT's) and I think if it wasnt for the fact that Rob has been driving it hard for a number of years now, we may have had some issues. Some of the stages may have been to difficult (especially when they got wet).
Oh and it is hard to say which CP had the best. Having good looking girls Clean the windsreen was very nice. Frank, see we told to you to put more mud on it for a reason. And having snags in bread was nice.
Also the midway point between stages 1 and 2. Was fantastic (space was a premium again though). Having donuts, snags, burgers (even if they did run out) and hot coffee, was a wonderfull site. So well done guys.
And to the Midway point between 3 and 4. dont get upset by people wanting to take there time sheets. We where about to us some curse words if ours wasnt taken we had less than a minute to get it in and we drove bloody hard to get there on time. OH and being that time of the morning makes competitors tired and cranky.
But it was anthor good place for coffee soup and a biscuit (I may have abused the free coffe here. Still suffering withdrawl symptoms).
Then the Brekki at the end was another good setup. And tasted good.
Just wish it was abit warmer for the girls to clean the car in Bikinis.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
As per e-mail received last week -Drafty wrote: Can someone tell me when and where the presentation is going to be held
The presentation dinner will take place on Wednesday, March 8th starting
at 7:30 p.m. We have allowed for two tickets per car for the attendance at
the dinner. If you plan to have more in attendance, can you please let us know as soon as possible by emailing Ruth at rgk@bigpond.net.au
I'm guessing the presentation will be at Brand Receptions as per previous years.
See you all there
Sounds like you had a good weekend. The problem with us is that we go around at warp speed and both the GPS and l cant keep up with Andrews driving. But while we stuff up a lot, and i will emphasise the word lot, we still have fun, which is what it's all about l suppose. O and my vote goes to the long legged window washer chicks, very, very nice, checkpoint that is
Thanks for the presentation details fish.

Yeah I think they will have to cut some slack.
After stage 1 just about everyone was behind plus once it started to rain and the tracks became slippery progress was slower. Plus the bloody fog made things even harder.
To finish each stage on time and answer every question you would have had to not make a mistake (there was virtually no margin for error) and be driving pretty hard and thats with the tracks dry.

Wow, where do I start. Our first challenge and it was certainly something to remember. We left Wollongong (Sydney) at 6.00am on Friday arriving at scrutineering at 6.00pm and then onto camp. Not much sleep Friday night what with everyone arriving and a few pre-event nerves.
Stage 1 started ok, after I got my head around how the notes were written. Got into a convoy after counting planks only to make our first mistake in the hype of trying to get to the front, we drove into the activity the wrong way, to the applause of all around. After finding a tree blocking our intended route we chose to cut to the end of stage 1 making it just in time.
Stage 2 went off really well, hit all the C.P's including the secret CP and the activity took 29sec. All this despite the rain and stopping for 5min to remove the second steering dampener. We finished 45min ahead of our scheduled time.
Nav test was easy, probably since I'm in the SES.
Stage 3 shouldn't be talked about. It was our worst stage. All I'll say is that we shouldn't have ended up on the dam wall, but least we weren't the only ones.
Stage 4 was one of our better ones and we managed to complete the whole lot. We were the 10th car on road into the secret CP and didnt hear anything about the stage being altered. Hope we get the points for our hard effort.
Back at camp we lied down for a quick kip before heading off, only only to wake at 12.30pm to find we were the only ones left. Anyway we packed and headed for home, driving right through. We got home at 2.00am Monday very tired.
Thanks to all who organised the event and it was good to catch up with people from this forum.

Got our notes, plotted a few points and got into it straight away. Seemed to be doing ok and arrived at checkpoint late and quite a few others as well apparently.
Stage 2
Started off good here as it was a pretty good downhill run for a couple of klms....ended up getting sucked in by a dummy question (how far is it from this point to mars) wihich gave us the belief that we were on the right track until everyone started doing u turns and headed the other way. Found the right track and found some rain starting to fall, coming around a bend and on a good downhill run we came across Franks Jabber down a section of hill sitting quite sideways after a bit of a roller coaster ride. Kris was out of the car but I reckon Franks arse cheecks had such a good grip on the seat that he could have taken his seatbelt off and not worried about being tossed around if it rolled. Anyway the winch was rolled out and we anchored our rig to a tree and winched him straight and lowered him down. On advise from Frank and Kris that it was too dangerous to come down ,we and everyone behind us turned around and retraced our steps to Mcgiures track.Needless to say we arrived at checkpoint 2 a little late.
Section 3
Started this about 12.30am after plotting a few points and doing Dream Creak Track we were pretty knackerd by around 3.00 am. My driver was not well with a bad headache and me being stuffed we withdrew from the event.
Although we were both dissapointed we could not hack the pace ,we thoroughly enjoyed it. No damage to the Cruiser which is great.
Hopefully be back next year and kick some butt.
