Well its around 6 months since i put the reco head on my Petrol 22r motor..
Now it seems the timing chain tensioner has slipped.... thus causing the chain to loose all tension on the "slack" slide of the crank.. if that makes sense...
the quiestion I am posting to the forum members is:
A: Is this a relatively simple job to fix?? ie i realise the timing cover must come off.. sump.. any masjor hassles i need to know about!?? Any recomendation on what parts to use? something more heavy duty say!??
B:
What do the members estimate the total cost to be should i take it to a mechanic to have done....??
Any likeliness of fix ing this and having something else major happen!???

If you have the skills to remove a head from an engine and replace it you have the skills to change a timing chain.
Just follow all the instuructions in the manual and you cant fail.
The pitfalls are really only getting the timing right which should be easy considering you have replaced the head, and maybe pulling the balancer off.
Mechanic would charge $500+ to change it.

Hello, my name is Scott and I am located in Washington State, USA. I am new here but thought that I could add something to this.
I would suspect a broken timing chain guide instead of a "slipped" tensioner.
I have an '83 Pickup (HiLux - not known as that in the US since 1978) After swapping engines in my truck several years ago we found that the CAM was one tooth off when my helper assembled the timing (while I made a parts run).
So we took the timing cover off and I think we may have also removed the oil pan (I do not remember exactly). Readjusted the timing, cut off the front most portion of the head gasket and reassembled everything using a high temp oil resistant sealant on the top.
The point of this was to save the cost and extra work of removing the head again. It's been many miles (kilometers?) and about 5 years and I did not have a single problem with the head gasket in the front.

ok so last weeknd was spent tinkering on the timing chain.... with the lux up on stands, sump undone,stablizer swung out of way, radaiator out, fan, belts,pullys airfilter crossover, rocker cover off. It was time to inspect what damage was done.. seems the ctensioner hasnt slipped... n as it still ran smooth an all..but that noise.... my guess was tensioner .. and if i had of been on who wants to be a millionaire and down to the last question i would hav been wrong, and gone home a broke man! ButI lucky i wasnt on Who Wants... so i just have to settle for nothin still...(':lol:') removed everythin no worries..but ugh what a mess of plastic n shit.. Now it all makes sense!! thanks american man!! You won the million!!
Off to Dursons... inquire about parts.. ok mate 96 or 98 link chain... heres me goin um... good question... there is two sizes!? appears so.. guess for the 96 and the order it in with new gears..130 and 1 day.. not bad!! get kit.. sweet everythin is there, gears fit, chains all greasy n new, bright gaskets, sweet!.. lets put guides on... um maybe lets not.... seems the guides are different thinknesses... Dang! back to Dursons, hey um, this kits all good n stuff but the guides seem differnt... ne idea?! guy@shop; for a hilux eh.. u got the rong kit there mate, this is a 98 link chain kit ud be after the 96... thicker guides.. weird.. ok get me that in.. another day later....
ok enough now main thing.. everythin went together sweet, no worries whats so ever.. MY only problem now is I need more oomph..thinkin a cam and exhaust mod,air cleaner might be tricky....
Iv got extractors and a whole lot of carbie, intake bits to suit a 22R-petrol 4x4 n wonder if ne one has a stock or aftermarket cam they wana let go cheap/trade!?
parts aside for now.
So which type of exhaust should i be going for!??? obviously extractrs but ne recomended brand? Am in melbourne and if neone knows or works at a place.. gis ahoy!!!
Tehn there is the cam.. anyone know of any swaps from other model toyotas that will fit!?? just asfter something less torquey and more go.ee.. if ya get that...
crow cams recomended a 1?? with a 280 price tag new.. or can grind mine.. but chances are going new..
Any thoughts or suggestions on what else to play with or ideas towards

B:electric superchargers.....thoughts!?
C: V6 conversion.. supercharged v6...If i ever came into cash!

Nah, way off. The 22r is one of the best motors ever made by Toyota. It has a turbo strength bottom end and no inherent faluts. These things will do 400,000 to 500,000km, properly maintained.
I've seen 1gg conversions in the US but it wouldn't be advisable here, their 22r-te hiluxs had R series gearboxes (supra type) ours have G series boxes and they'll die behind a strong motor.
If you can find an early 89 or 90 4runner (2door), some of these had 22R/R151 drive trains, thats what I used in my Lux. All v6 4runners have the stronger box and the genuine bellhousing is still available.
My 22r-te lux easily outran my wifes 3.5 rodeo.
