DIFFERENCE IN DIFF ON 78 & 79

Can some one please tell me what the difference is in the front diffs between a 1978 fj45 and a 1979 fj45.

The bolt pattern on the steering arms are smaller on the 1978 and older. The 1979 and newer have the same bolt pattern as the solid axle Hilux, 60 series and 75 series.

If you go to US or European boards, they will say the 1979 has a 3.70 gear ratio. In Aus. they kept the 4.11.

there are only two different types of cvs throughout that range of models, the easiest way to tell is have a look at the acctual cv joint there will be a flat machined in the cup and one sort of cv has a big flat the other a small

Thanks for that chevj40, i'll sus it out, the reason i'm ask is that i have a 60series diff in the shed and i pulled the hubs of hoping that i could put the disc brakes on my 45. Want to upgrade the cv's while it's pulled apart.

The CVs on the 1978 and 1979 are almost identical except the '78 has a slightly longer shaft. If you keep the '78 CV, run the locking hub from the '78 otherwise the CV c-clip groove sits too far past the hub body. Conversely if you use the CV from the '79, use the locking hub from the '79 as it is shorter.

What chevj40 was referring to is the difference between the 79-89 CV versus the 90-99 CV with the smaller flats.

I'd use all 60 series parts for the disc conversion. You still will have to deal with the different tie rod tapers between your 40 series and the 60 series. You can use a tapered shim or find 1979+ 40 series parts or 75 series parts instead.

both of thoose types came out in the 40 series dave thats why i said the easiest way to tell is in the groove of the cv the smal grove is the longer shaft the bigger groove is the shorter shaft
