Coil Rates

Post by BigMav »

How can I tell the type of coil spring rate that I am using? Is it a case of just measuring the coil thickness with verniers for the stiffness and amount of coils for height? :?

can you go into a bit more detail? ie. if it is xxxmm thick than that would be xxxft/lb spring. I would have thought static height will change a fair bit with age so that wouldn't really work as my springs are older and have definitely sagged quite a bit.

Get a fatty like me 100kg to sit on it and measure the drop, rough but close enough. Different tempers and grades of steel I would assume could lead to differences in physical measurements and counts between manufacturers?

Big Mav
Post your coil dimensions and I will reply with your coil rates.
Dimensions required.

Coil ID
Coil turns - list fraction of turns
Wire OD
Coil Free Length

A coils rate will alter (very slightly) with the differance in free length.

If you know brand name or colour of shock, then please list.

Talk soon

I'll take some measurements tomorrow. Free length? Is that the overall height of the spring when unladen?
