Bullbar Rumour

Post by blkmav »

I was informed yesterday the style of bullbar below is not legal anymore due to the protruding lower eyelets, fairlead mount and bar uprights.

Image

I believe all new bars need to be styled like this with inset fairlead, rubber bumpers etc.

They're both ARB bars...

Not legal for future sales, or are existing units to be banned?

Bullbars are dangerous to pedestrians. Around town, a pedestrian has a better chance of surviving an impact with a "standard" vehicle than one equipped with a bullbar - particularly when the vehicle is a newer one, like those in the photos.

I think removing protrusions such as those in the top photo is a good thing - although I can't see that the fairlead in the lower photo is much better than the one in the top photo.

If legislation is to be retroactively enforced (unlikely) then an new market will open for modifications and/or "covers" to make existing bull-bars comply. And if the government is really serious about it being a "road safey initiative" then all parts and labour will be GST free.

I guess this is fall-out from the incident which was the "Postie's Pick" letter in April's 4wd Monthly. There will probably be stories running around for a while - time will tell.

Edit: I thought the above incident was bogged here, but couldn't find it.

i read a piece from the RTA at a club meeting a little while back about bullbars..... all bars with square edges and flat posts, like the ones in the pictures are illegal to be sold in NSW.... from what i can remember, it's going to be retrospective sooner or later... can't remember what year they are wanting to bring it in..... Herr Scruby will add another notch to his gun belt.

I'll speak to our club president and see if he or our club secretary still has it on file somewhere.

if you cut the top off (the "eye brow" bits) then the bull bar becomes a "bumper" bar.

this is what i've done, so bring on the banning of bull bars, shouldn't have any effect on what i've got

a pic to show you what i'm trying to say.

That bit your winch cable is hooked to? That's something they're cracking down on - it would be classified as a "sharp protrusion."

i'd agree, hit a roo at about 30Km/h. and killed it with those bits, was hard on the breaks as well. :!:

mooman & RoeDao

Why?

You've now got heavy bumper bars (OK - winch bars) which are only marginally more "pedestrian friendly" than a full bull bar. Strike a roo at highway speeds and you've got no protection for your radiator. This doesn't bother you?

Just curious.

funny you should say that.
but i've already hit another roo at 100km/h and it went straight under the front in the middle. no damage exept for polished diffs and fur everywhere.
the shape of the bar helps them go under, it sort of like a boat front. which pushes them down into the road.

quite scary when you're in a zook :!:

My father would argue with that. He didn't see the roo until he hit it. Pushed his smartbar back onto his bonnet, and it sprung back again. He finished his trip, the roo didn't.

because my bullbar looked like crap. It had been involved in some kind of accident and had been cut and re-welded, was a crap job too, plus it was rubbing on the guards and pushing the flares off..... it's aluminium so it's light enough to hang off the little guy with no discomfort hehe
A roo would have cleaned up the bar real quick...... i'll wait for brooksy's bar :D

yep i agree

my old man hit a small roo not a joey but not in early adult
and it pushed the alloy bar back into the guard and that was at low speed

we noticed the other day that the hole bar is bent and twisted hard to see from out side the car but when u look at hte mounts etc

if it had been bigger and fast the bull bar would have been rat shit for shiz

cheers

I beg to differ, i hit a bit Roo at about 110k's and if i didn't have a bullbar it would have gone straight through the radiator, but instead it just splattered everywhere with no damage to the car.

But admittedly i do have a steel bullbar.

If they make the rules retrospective then the army will have to modify all its vehicles.

Oh, there was a post above this called "So do you really need a bull bar?"
That was originally what I 'Googled' for this thread...

"Bull" bars are designed to minimize damage (mainly to the radiator) from an animal strike. Very rarely will there be no damage at all. This allows you to drive home (from possibly remote areas) and get it repaired for hopefully a reduced amount.

Any sharp protrusion, eg; recovery eyelets, sharp fairlead brackets, fishing rod holders, have always been banned.
My understanding is that the bar in the first picture will no longer be allowed to be sold new or manafactured. If you currently have a bar like that it should remain legal because it complied with the law at the time of production/fitment.
