OZ Rock 4x4 Round 1 - 11th-12th March - Walbundry NSW

Thanks man.
Yep we gave competitors and marshals a total of 25 slabs of water as it was so hot.
Death is BAD and FINAL.
We stopped the clock a total of 8 times as to re-hydrate spotter and driver mid event as indicated by our medical officer as it was a 43 deg day.
Our on track Medical officer will and does overide any call on a safty basis.
On ya Besty (I have also been yelled at by Besty doing his job).
Besty was also up with Sam Keck at 4am to make sure he was grinding and welding in a safe manner back at camp. (how are the sun glasses SAM).
Besty has everyones best interest in mind so dont dispute his call as we all will back him at the drop of a hat 100%. He is also the only one to overide ANY other call (even mine).

What an awsome event. Could only make it up for day two, the terrain was second to none, the whole town backing the event and some incredible driving.
What a drive by Cal on stage 2

OzRock on the weekend was the first rock crawling event I have been able to attend and I think I picked the right one to go to, I had a ball
I drove my truck there straight from work, parked with the others at the footy ground and slept in the back (when I finaly got the drunk ABT cheer sqaud girls out ) had breaky put on by the footy club for 4 bucks, and wandered on up to the event.
I was impressed with the casual but serious way it was run, with most other motorsports the spectator is treated as the enemy, but not here, I would find a nice soft chunk of granite close to the action, sit myself down for an hour and could almost touch the cars as they went by if I was any closer Taz would have thrown me under a wheel
and yet they were very serious about safety, if there was any chance of a mishap they would move the crowd to a safe spot, and corect me of I am wrong but with the exception of Cheezys badly blistered feet (I almost threw up ) the day was injury free and that has got to be a good thing.
Anther thing that suprized me was how affordable it was, (which is very rare for motorsport), camping was $15, breaky $4, admision $15, water $1.50, even the food was cheap (and good) and the free sunscreen was a nice touch Cheezy.
I was saying to Moose in the shower after the event as we both lathered up vigorously, that I will definatly be coming again
Peter.
PS, Mick you are a soft rooster, had you worked on your buggy till 3am each day for a month before instead of only 2am you would have had an extra 30 hours and it would have been finished, pathetic, they don't make them like they used to

Didn't other Spectators have the Yellow Shirts deliberately stand in front of them The worst(best) offender was 'Offroad Images'.
Also, the old Grey haired Bloke stood between a Car and a Fire Marshall, on the third Stage on Saturday.
When the Course is being layed out, could there please be more thought put into Spectators viewing.
Other than those two issues, it was a very well run Event.

I have no idea what you are talking about Jonathan Ferguson, are you implying that people in safety vests deliberately stood in front of you to block your view? I would very much doubt it unless you were with the woman with the very big funbags (I think there were a few people hanging around her ),Jonathan Ferguson wrote:Didn't other Spectators have the Yellow Shirts deliberately stand in front of them The worst(best) offender was 'Offroad Images'.

Hi Adam
and if the guy from off road images gets in one persons way taking photo's for thousands, I would think that is fair enough.
and as far as,
"When the Course is being layed out, could there please be more thought put into Spectators viewing"
are we talking about the same event?
I was blown away by how close I was to the action.

Jonathon,
One of the best things about this sport is that we CAN get the spectators within a couple of metres of the vehicles SAFELY.
One of the biggest things to promote the sport in Australia is by getting really good coverage with the magazines and soon TV, so at this stage the photographers need to get into the best position to take the pics that will get more and more people interested and eventually get more and more buggies competing. BUT.....by doing this, they ocasionally block the view (usually only momentarily) of the spectators.
When tracks are designed, it is usually (read always) made to 'push' both drivers, spotters and vehicles to the limit, rather than the spectators. This is due to the environmental conditions on where the competition is being held. When the Man-made track gets made for Round 6, the spectator viewing will play a vital role in course design and layout.
Please bear with us and the photographers whilst Australian Rock-Crawling is still in its infancy.
Crowd numbers for Oz Rocks Events have been in excess of 1000 people over the two days, so it is getting out there to the public to get them to take more interest, make buggies and challenge themselves in a relatively new and rapidly growing Motor Sport.
Thankyou for the Feedback and we will take into account what you have said regarding course design for best spectator viewing.
I, personally, whilst the courses are being run, do go into the crowd and ask if people have a good view, look at what they're seeing and on more than one occasion have reminded the marshalls to step aside so the paying public can get a better view. (In 90% of the pics, you will NOT see me !!)
I hope to see you at Oz Rock Round 2 in Yea. The Standard has now been set for the toughest rock crawling in Australia.........what's a Bonus Line ???

HEY I got a mention
I only got to go on Sat and thougt it was a well run event. They really looked after everyone with water for the marshalls, plenty of food and drinks, free sunscreen and enough toilets around the place.
My only concern was that maybe the crowd was TOO close.
When NAMs vehicle was being recovered people were standing within 2 metres of the winch cable ( one bloke was even sitting inside the bunting?), gloves took a while to be found and cable dampers left a little to be desired. Being a CCDA trained marshall I tried to move the crowd back but without that orange vest only about 2 people actually listened to me. There should have been more than enough marshalls there to do that.
Someone could have been at the start to give the vehicles a quick check as well, NAMs powersteering resivior cap was hanging off at the start of that stage and I had allready told him it was off earlier in the day (he fixed it then so I'm not picking on you NAM)
After that little rant I'm still saying it was a well run event and the orange/yellow vests didn't worry me.
Well done fellas
Graeme

Allways been a TOYOTA man.
Now I'm old and grumpy as well.
Now I'm old and grumpy as well.
Thanks for your comments Graeme, and you're right........the crowd do like to get very close to the action and despite asking numerous times for the crowds to move from the recovery, people still thought it was alright to stand too close.
As a marshall, it gets very frustrating that people don't listen to you when asked to do something, because nothing happens until they move.....if they don't, then it holds up the process, and the action takes longer to happen.
If you're interested in Marshalling for the next event, give Cheezy a holler and prepare yourself for lots more action at Yea

and as Besty says any inconveiniance caused by the off road images photographer would be tempory.
and as for were I was this past week end, if you had looked just 6 posts above yours you would have known, but to save you looking I was at OzRock at Walbundrie and I met 3 drunk locals all named bubba who didnt wear any shirts and yelled out PUNCH IT or GO CHEECH every 3 minutes while carving tatoo's in each other with dry sticks
I find it strange that one thing that stood out as a plus for me was a pain for you, maybe my fat arse was blocking your view sorry.

ok to address the j-ferguson stuff. Yellow vests = media, so he was saying media people got in his way. it's a problem with all events, i tried to keep my fat arse out of the way, but sometimes there's too much to concentrate on and you forget. i hate it as a spectator, but after being under the bunting understand why it happens. i'm pushing for less vests on course myself, so feel your pain.
FINALLY... after 3000 k's, including 1000k's in a GQ with no plates, and constant power steering failures, i'm back in my own home....
what a trip.
every time i go to talk about the event i'm speachless... that was some of the best driving i've seen... bally found the skinny pedal, and finally learnt what cages are for, but geez what a professional outfit. tazz was 400 times the spotter he was for werock finals. top effort.
the ABT boys ensured that he didn't take the honours for use of the skinny pedal. these guys are compeditive for sure, some more experience and you guys'll be the ones to beat. oh and i'm the camera man in the crack on stage 1 sunday, and i swear you were aiming for me
Sam and Co. that buggy is sweet. my hilight of the event was your shot at the buttcrack of death first up on sunday. i think i held my breath for all of it. oh and that was some damn fine axle engineering
Nam and Wendle. good to meet wendle. you can tell he's knowlegable, and the way he lead that truggy round showed he's got his eye in for this stuff... come on wendle, i know you said you weren't into competing, but your a natural. Nam, you proved your a little man with a big set. you sold that steering wheel on ebay yet?
Rob and Co... don't forget to let your rear winch out. oh, and damn you need sponsorship for CTM or something testing the strength of their components.
Cal and Maurice... the quiet achievers... i think you've challenged cheezy into designing a course that'll make you guys get on the angry pedal, because you crawled most that stuff so easy it wasn't funny.
to the fellow marshals, and media (except guts), great effort guys, see ya in yea. to guts... stay out of my tent at 3 am, find yourself a lama instead
