MQ blowing smoke
I am having similar probs but have some more questions
sd33t motor 315000 kms old (no blow By)
Car has not been reg for 3 years not sure if it has been driven much though
Engine is ok at start up
blow a little black smoke all the time
at full accelleration it pumps it out specialy at higher revs
new filters (exept fuel), new injectors
My questions could it be the fuel been in there for well no one knows
Oil change???
Could it be that screw on the side you talked about
anything else if you
ANYTHING ELSE>>??

rubbish...here is the cure for smoky (white unburnt derv) at start up.
new glow plugs or your checked.
leave them on longer before start up
AND ADVANCE PUMP TIMING ABIT!!!!!!
been there done it cured it..on lots of sd33's
oh check no water in fuel filter..
now very little/no smoke on -5c start ups, compared to wait for nobody around before starting!!
if it smokes white/blue when hot differnt story!!

V8Patrol wrote:White smoke is a sign of a cold motor= replace the glowplugs.
Black smoke is a sign of a rich mixture= not a major drama in a diesel
Blue smoke is from oil being burnt=replace either rings or get the valves lapped in (they may need "K liners" too) and new valvestem seals fitted.
If your worried about water in the tank .......flush it !!!!!!
tip....
drive it and get some pics of the smoke thats worring you, bit hard to judge from someones interpretations

Well done V8Patrol, i was waiting for someone to give him this info set out in this way, it's nice to see that some people have the common sense to give advice in a simple non-confusing manner. However you have yourself a little mixed up.
BLACK SMOKE - is burnt OIL, not a fuel problem.
BLUE SMOKE - is rich Fuel mixture.
WHITE SMOKE - is a cold combustion burn, or an improper burn for some reason.
Duct tape is like the force it has a Dark side a Light side and holds everything together
disagree.
black smoke is too rich on fuel. full stop.
white is raw or left over fuel in the cylenders from cold motors or weeping injectors.
blue is burning oil.
V8PATROL is 100 percent spot on the mark.

God of Magnificant Ideas!
In one simple word ......... no !4130warrior wrote:do you guys reckon its a natural progression? after the rear air locker, 2in lift and 33s, it'll go 36s and a front locker, SPOA and V8 eh?
The "natural progression" is to trade up as jeff stated so one theroetically should go from MQ to GQ to GU etc, but the costs involved in this constant chasing of the tail have some drawbacks which are counterd by "advanced modding" of the current ride.
Not everyone can afford a GU and even the humble GQ is out of some peoples price range but the old tried tested and proven MQ can be had for very few dollars and the mods can be done in a slow yet progressive manor to suit an individuals wallet.
On say a $5,000 budget you'd get a far more modified MQ compared to a GQ......... you obviously wouldnt be able to afford the GU at all on this sort of budget......
On a $10,000 budget youd have one awsome MQ and a reasonably modded GQ, the GU however..... well you might get a drivable unit but no mods as yet.
If $20,000 is available just imagine the MQ and what it would be capable of....
Obviously the GQ would be a awsome rig aswell and the GU would have some abilities to stay up there with the other two rigs but would still need more bucks spent on it
The other most important issue in my opinion is the relitave value of the thing compared to where or what you attempt to drive, I have absolutely no fear in thrashing my modded MQ through rough terrain, if it gets flopped ......... so what !
Take that attitude and apply it to someones pride and joy ..... shinny new paint without a dent of scratch and see if they realy want to follow you, the likelyhood is as I have seen on many occasaions is they chuck in a Uturn and exit the area to meet up later.
To me thats not fun nor is it challenging, sure its "nice" to have a smick new shinny rig with the latest electronic wizardry but if your too frighten to "drive it" ......
whats the point ?
