steering box breather needed??

Post by ash_on_mtb »

I'm off to the shops today to get some diff breather stuff, and noticed that the steering box (which has a leak at the bottom seal- how do I get to it and where can I get a replacement?) has a breather also. Whilst I'm at it, would it be a good idea to put one on that, or its so rare that water gets to that level that its not really necessary?
Anyone else run one? Its non-powersteer if that matters.

Youd be able to get the seal from repco or bursons...

If yours is an 86/ IFS 4Runner it will have power steering.
Cheers,
Dan.

this is arguably the stupidest thing posted here today, but I'm pretty certain it ain't!! As far as I see there is a shaft from the steeering to a kinkage join under a crap cover, then into the steering box (bolted to the outside of the chassis in the wheel arch almost) then the arm comes off the bottom of that and joins the steering linkage. I don't see the power part... :?

am I wrong?

The greatest idea broached thus far is rip it off, steam clean it, paint it and say its a reco job. There's only a worm drive in it right? Fill it with grease, top back on, away I go!!

I have exactly the same car as you dude... Ok, on the passengar side of the motor, at the top is the water pump, below that is the injection pump, then at the bottom is your power steering pump. running acros the car underneath the radiator is the power steering lines, these run into the steering box on the drivers side of the car. There should also be a gold coloured pot up near the wiper motor on the passengar side of the car near the fuel filter - thats the power steering fluid res.

I havnt seen a breather cap, nor ever heard of one mentioned before.

Fill it up with grease.... no. Assuming your going for a RWC, if wont be passed if the steering box is leaking, so take it to a steering joint and ask them about it if you arent comfortable tackling the problem yourself.
Cheers,
Dan.

cooooool, you mean to tell me that I have power steer!!!

NAh, hang on, I've just been searching in the dark and ....

1) no gold coloured thing on the firewall other than the fuel filter
2)No hoses anywhere near the radiator and certainly nothing going into steering box and
3) no other pumps beyong water and fuel (and my compressor- :D )

and I certainly have a breather, exactly the same as on the diffs, well until tonight wher they got upgraded to hoses and filters

And grease, why the hell not. Its not like the steering will get heavier

And it won't leak after its cleaned, painted, greased and called a reco box :D

cheers
