4 Runner warning lights.

Post by Cracka »

Just hoping for a bit of advice. I have an '89 4 Runner, 2.8 diesel. Today, the following warning lights came on the dash, fuel filter, timing belt and charge light.

The timing belt has only just been replaced 1200 kms ago, there is no water in the filter and there is no problem with the battery/belts.

After checking those things, I drove it and noticed that all those warning lights disappeared when the revs reach 2800 and then re-appear when the revs drop below 2800.

Any help appreciated.

Yep. Time for an alternator recon by the look of it but check all the wiring and then do an alternator output check first.

checke the tention on the belt could be slipping
get some degreaser and sprag all the pullings and tentioners and also the belt and give is a good wash down

and if that all fails get the alternator to a auto sparky and get em to bench test it and also load test it
The load test is very important
cos it will probly seem fine when theres no load on it
Dont worrys There's No Sugar

Took the car to the auto elec on Monday. It was the bushes in the alternator, he reconditioned the alternator, all up cost $242. I was pretty pleased with that seeing as though he told me a replacement, at his cost is $530 plus GST and labour.

thanks all.

A replacement for a brand new one maybe. But not for a reco one. If he done the bearings for that price too i would be amazed, but it is recomended to do them at the same time as doing the bushes.
