Hi all. Just bought my first RR and may be having dramas already.
It's an 86 rr efi vogue and although I test drove it the other day and it was driven to my place working fine, the gearbox (24hours later) seems to be stuck in first gear. It's an auto box (I'm assuming it's a ZF 4speed although my old man isn't convinced because there is only 3 selectable forward gears plus drive on the selector) and the previous owner said he has never had a problem like this before. I'm inclined to believe him for various reasons.
I tried cycling through the gears as well as just using drive but I only get first gear. Even tried taking the revs up close to redline and backing off. BTW - it's my first auto so I'm not real clued up about them yet. Does making sure it's very warm before moving offf make a difference? I'll check the oil levels this afternoon.
Any thoughts on what might be the cause would be appreciated
Cheers

does it take off in first from drive??? or do you have to select 1/L on the shifter???justinC wrote:You'll find it is more than likely a sticking governer. This will make it stay in first gear no matter what the RPM or road speed.

Mine wouldnt take off from drive i had to select first and then after moving along if enough speed was up i could jump to second or sumtimes drive but as soon as it went under load it jumped into nuetral, turns out mine was completely stuffed...
If it still takes off from drive and is just acting as per normal but not getting out of 1st then its most likely is just as has already been said just a sticky governor.
If its going into nuetral (no drive at all) under load or in any selected gear then your probs may be worse (like mine :( )
cheers

p.s. yes it is a ZF4 Auto (4 Speed) with lock up convertor (kicks in around 80ks when cruising). Its should be mated to a LT230 transfer case.
I reckon you are up for a reconditioned Auto.
Have you changed the transmission oil?
Put yourself out of your missery and get it checked out me thinks, or into your missery.
There is a place down the Gold Coast that isn't too expensive. Are you on the south side or north side?

Reco gearbox!!!!
Don't tell me that, I thought my truck was a bargain at $1500-
Actually it turned out to be a downshift (?) cable that apparently pops out of place and gets stuck when you give it a bootful. The old owner got back in touch with me because he remembered the fault. He hadn't had the problem for a while because he didn't often plant it..........mentioned something about the price of fuel.........................
Cheers
