hey guys, a family friend offered me an 84 range rover for 1.5k, the engine is fine, very little rust, duel fuel and needs a general tidy up.. just wondering if its worth buying, for rego needs 4 new tyres and a few other little things.
so my question is, 'is the car worth buying and restoring'

How much has been spent in the last 5 years? How many Ks?
An LT95 rebuild could cost 2-3K, Engine top overhaul 1.5-2K , alloy upper tailgate 0.6K
etc,etc
If you have a piggy bank of say 5-8K then you should be OK, as long as its not rusty in the floor, sills, rear cross member etc.
BUT it could be that elusive bargain we all search for.

for $1500, i'd say hell yes, if its in half decent condition.... Especially on dual fuel, if you're concerned about running costs. You could probably part it and get your money back if you decided it wasn't what you want.
A mate of mine bought a 2 door for $1600, put new front brake lines on and its roadworthy.... of course somewhere along the line flares, 2inch body and spring lifts and a roof removal accidentally occured, but you get the point!

84 Rangie, 3 inch spring lift, 2 inch body, Megasquirted 4.6, R380, rear Maxi, 34x11.5 JT2s. Simex FM installed.

Bloody hard to say without seeing the car. Rangie are (unfortunately) almost worthless these days which is a damned pity for some (sellers & owners) but good news for others (those buying obviously). I guess it's unregistered and that could be a problem because it can sometimes cost heaps to get them onthe road .. remember it is 22 years old not and who knows how well it was maintained or what sort of life it has had. You might be lucky like raginrovers mate but then again you might not. LPG is a good thing if it works and is in date, new tyres won't cost much and if (big IF) it gets a roady easily then you could be motoring for $2500 and they are a whole lot of car for that sort of petty cash.
See if you can get it to MR Automotive at redcliffe there for an appraisel. Those guys know their Rangies and are pretty straight shooters. I've had plenty of the old dears over the years (hey that rhymes ) and if I was a bit closer could have a look for you. I'm coming down to Brisvegas on Monday and might be able to have a peek late Monday arvo as I'll be almost driving past on my way back up the Sunny Coast.

Sounds like a good price, but like everyone here has mentioned, you may be up for some brass before you even get to drive it registerd.
Rust is the big issue here, being a 22 year old Rangie and in QLD there's plenty of dungas out there with rust slowly chewing there way through your floors, sills and chassis. Alsois it manual or auto. Autos are gutless to say the least (I had an 84 Rangie auto years ago), but with that Chrysler torque-flite box designed to be big block V8 not 3.5L Rover, they do last a while, if you can live with the gutless aspect. Ther 5 speed LT77 box is not great but does the job. There cheap to replace with many selling for less than $500 second hand these days if you shop around.
If it doesn't work out, keep looking as there's plenty of bargains out there to be had in Rangies.
