Leaking axle seal on HILUX

Hi guys.
I've replaced the inner axle oil seals in my rear hilux axle housing and the left hand is leaking. I put another new one in the left and it started leaking again.
I've just put new brake shoes and cylinders in so I want to fix it quick before the oil gets on the new brake shoes.

Any suggestions appreciated.

The seals are not the problem.

Your problem is most likely worn bearings. Replace them and your leaks will cease....Your bearings are probably in pieces!

did you replace the wheel bearing if the bearing has play it will were out the axle seal you can buy the inner & outer seals + bearing in a kit this should fix your problem.

I replaced the bearings 10 months ago, and the car hasn't done a lot of mud work since.
Surely the bearings wouldn't wear out that quickly?

When I had my diff re-built I noticed the place had put some of the red silicon around the area where the seal is.Im hoping they didnt put too much ,but soo far I havent had any leaks for nearly a year

I see where your comin from, but it seems a bit more major than something like that. I put second seal in on sunday, and its leakin already. Sounds more like the wheel bearing, but that was only put in 10 mths ago.

Check to see if the axle is damaged when the retainer collar was refitted.

collar is fine.
I'm gona put another seal in now and be VERY careful. Apparently it only takes a slight tap in the wrong direction when fitting the seal, and it can f*&k it, without you realising.

However, I am still curious as to how the same side has leaked with new seals, twice.

Mate I used to have the same problem when I kept replacing my rear axle seals and bearings.In the end I just put it into a shop to do and never had a leak for over a year

Depending on brand there are two types of seals, one that is metal casing which is easily distorted and a hard plastic type. Go for the hard plastic.

Ok, I've just fitted the third seal to the left hand side. (Hard plastic type which apparently has steel inside)
Lets see how she goes.
If it leaks again I'm goin straight to the shop Revin.

you will probably find that the axle where the seal rubs against is damaged and worn, from a bearing servic/supplier you can get speedy sleeves that go on to the axle where the rubber touches and it provides a go0d surface for the seal to seal against. you have to take your axle in to bearing place to get the right size sleeve.

you then get some cement(ask bearing place) and the sleve fits over the axle and you have a good surface.

i used them in my old middy on many different oil seals. they are not cheap for a bit of tin but they do the trick $40 ish for the axle ones.
