expected life of a tb45e
as i cant find too many 4.2tdi GUs around im looking at a few 4.5 petrols.
everything looks fine on them except for the Ks. most i have seen are between 160k and 210k.
whats the expeced life for these engines before i start having dramas with them? would 200k be too high?

Re: expected life of a tb45e
without knowing the history of them, its a pure lottery.
Some may last 300/400k klms others may last 200,000...
As to max klms, one in our club with 350,000 on it but he has spent a lot of coin on it over time.

does 15k sound good for a ST in good condition with dual batteries, snorkel, bar and lights etc... with 200k on the clock?

I am getting pretty close to 250K in mine with barely a problem, the brushes in the starter, a battery, belts etc .. and will have to replace a weepy welch plug sooner or later ....
Oil changed every 10000 to 12000 Ks usually with HPR30 (seem to use a bit of oil on other brands) on HPR 30 uses about half a liter between changes.
Showing no signs of slowing down, still drinks petrol like its a 9 liter engine not a 4.5

What are your plans? Engine swap? EG The late model 4.2T that Giant had complete ready to go for $7k? And Auto for about $3k rebuilt? Flog 4.5 to comp kiddies, and laughin..?

i still want the 4.2 but they are proving quite hard to come by.
whatever i get the motor has to be good for at least 50,000ks so i can have time to get the new one ready if i go down that path.
im assuming the box is the same as the 4.2?

bit of both,
i want to keep the total cost under $25k and so far the only way of doing this is to buy a 4.5ltr
i could get a 4.2 but then id have no money to mod it. id have to wait another 6months before i could do anything to it.
if i get a 4.5 for $15k then il have $10k to mod it (lift,35s,engineers, bar work, lights, tanks etc....)

Is that really an issue?j-top paj wrote:i could get a 4.2 but then id have no money to mod it. id have to wait another 6months before i could do anything to it.
They are quite capable in stock form with a set of good tires on.... Also wont be MANY worth while 4.2's at all for under $30k.
True. but it still isnt what you want, and a diesel conversion is going to not be cheap...if i get a 4.5 for $15k then il have $10k to mod it (lift,35s,engineers, bar work, lights, tanks etc....)
Depends if you look short term or long.
i would just wait and find a 4.2 look what gueey just bought in members for 28k
If you do major mods to the 4.5 i.e. 35s bigger lift and other bar work its going drink fuel even more then your going to be contemplated to put gas on it....
So if i was you id find an ideal base first then look at modding it

im planning on the next 5years at least. i want to do some big trips in it.
gas will definately be an option. if one already has gas then it might be what makes the deal.
the 4.2s i have seen are around the 200k mark, but if the engine/driveline is good then thats really what im after. i dont mind if the rest of the car is a bit worn out as long as its reliable.
can anyone tell me if the 4.5ltr driveline is the same as the 4.2?
i know there are 2 size boxes and diffs and the 2.8 got the smaller one but im not sure what everything else got.
id think the 4.5 would have the bigger driveline but not 100%????
