shackle reversal now or later?

shackle reversal now or later?
I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on shakle reversal?
Do you think that its always better to have the shakle behind the axel?
I currently have the body off my 83 bj so if I hear that its the way to go i'll do it now rather than later.
Does anyone know if its leagal in QLD?
I understand that having the shackle behind the axel would help the wheels over obstacles as the suspention compresses, as the wheel would move back and over instead of forward and over.
Is there anything else I have to do? or just swap the brackets.
Does it have any negative effects?
thanks for the info

I don't own or know much about 40 series nor am I an engineer. However I think that the mod has merit but there is more to it than you think. The castor angle will be affected which affects drivablilty. It may affect ride height depending on the position of the axle relative to the mounting points. If this is the case, then there is a possiblity that it will affect shock lengths, brake lines and possibly steering.
I think that it would be engineerable but you'll have to check that one out yourself.
Just making sure that you understand that there is often more than meets the eye. Usually one mod = another 3 mods to counteract side effects
Somewhere on the web, there is info from some engineering type person explaining why landcruisers have the shackle at the front but I can't remember why or where to find it. I think it had something to do with axle wrap under deceleration and it might have been at that "ih8mud" website?
Good luck

Bloody hell! I didnt think it would improove approach angle that much thats heeps good.
Another thing i wanted to know about yours is where did you mount your 60s power steering box? They have a different bolt pattern than the 40s ones. I was going to make up an adaptor that went from the 40s bracket to the 60s box is that what u did?

i am not positive on the 60 box - but dont worry about your stock mount plate the chassis inside and out - drill holes right through the plates and frame, sleeve these holes and bolt it down using grade 8.8's (being metric bolt)

yes it needs to be mod plated - easy to get passed though - when you mount the box make sure to do it right - get on pirate you will see plenty of rigs with cracked frames and boxes ripped off the frame due to improper mounting

BJ has/had a similar setup using the 60series box. I have done the same(copied), based the mounting point on getting the arm in a postion that would enable the two steering rods to be as || as possible without the box fouling the radiator etc. Can't tell U how good or bad it is as my lot is still under construction. I have done my SOA without using blocks to space the spring further away from the chassis - the shackle on the front springs now pivots through the chassis ala Hilux. I'm using 55 springs and expect more than enough lift without the extra 50mm or so, especially after a minor body lift to cope with stuffing tyres up and into guards.
