project "DIY TURBO" : Failure

Post by 85lux »

A while ago i was talking about fitting a Garrett GT17 i had laying around to my 3B. i wasn't sure if it would be too small for the 3B.
Well it was. it only makes 6psi with the wastegate jammed closed. best i get myself a t25 or something. at least i will still be able to use the oil and coolant lines.
i think the car went better before the turbo went on. the baby turbo is choking it to death.

Interesting I've been thinking of dropping a TD04 on my 3B they are easy and cheap to find (stock turbo on a wrx) few guys in states have used same turbo with flipped manifold with decent results

Where did you run your oil lines to and from? The pan and the vaccuum pump?

might try something like the wrx turbo then.
coolant:
i am not using the heater so i used the heater supply and return ports on the block to go to the turbo.
oil:
put a t-piece in the pressure sender port on the oil pump to do both turbo and oil pressure.
welded a 3/8bsp socket onto the sump as an oil return.
for the oil supply pipe i used 1/4" copper tube with brass fittings. not dificult, just fidly.

Im 99% sure you the TD04 isnt water cooled so you only have to muck around with oil lines

I'm going to attempt a TD04 after easter assuming I can find a stock manifold easily enough will let you know how I go

i doubt the garret turbo is to small as it was only making the smaller it is the quicker it boosts and should go over 6psi. what most diesel turbos are hybird turbos with different turbines and compressors to make the boost at lower rpms
