I've got some tyres fitted by a bloke, now have to get them balanced, call up the tyre people, they ask what its on etc, silly me says that they are on a Hilux, and he says that he can't fit them back on because they are illegal at 31"...
WTF?
So tyres off, tyres on to drive to store, balance, tyres off, tyres on, this is rubbish...
Is he for real, or have I just found a tightarse...?? Anyone know a 4wd friendly store in chadstone/carnegie/oakleigh?? He was looking at $7.50 a tyre, whereas BobJane was 11- a tyre... I'd love about 5 per tyre
I think you will see this more due to companies being prosecuted under the "chain of responsibility" scenario.
The idea is that if a company knowingly fits illegal tyres to a road registered vehicle, they have some responsibility if those tyres are responsible for an accident.
There are many outs, they can say "he said the tyres were just for his paddock use" etc, but if they then watch you drive off in them after they balance them for ya, they're back in the shit I guess.

no, no, I understand what you meant. What I'm quietly inferring is, what sort of car might these tyres be fitting on (because of COURSE, they wouldn't go back on a hilux, your honour )

Assuming your hilux is an older model and that it came out with alloys, you can 'legally' put 31" tyres on a hilux if you get the other placard from toyota for the cheese cutters which are a similar rolling diameter to a 31" tyre. What you can't however do is fit 31" BFG's because their load rating is 109 and you require 112 (?) - going from memory here.
Having said that - toyota organised a set of 31 10r 15 BFG's for my brand new hilux in 2003......no questions asked.
Times are changing though.

The standard size on Hilux are 205R16 and 255/70R15 which have Overall Diameters of 738mm (roughly). The 31x10.50R15 are 775mm which technically puts them outside the legal range (can't wait for the end of june).
As far as load carrying capacity... if you look at the vehicle placard, the blurb down the bottom over rides the OE load rating of 112 (1120kg/tyre) and allows a fitment of a tyre as long as it is equal to or exceeds the axle load rating of the vehicle.
Older Hilux have a rear axle load capacity of 1570kg and '05 onwards have a 1600kg which means as low as 100 in the load rating is legal.
Majority of 31x10.50R15 are a 109 (1030kg/tyre) which is well above the minimum requirement.

I know of a certain tyre shop balancing 39.5" tyres on a Hilux
It all depends on the tyre shop and the customer. Get to know a tyre dealer in your area and they will do the right thing by you.

Apparently. Haven't got written confirmation on this yet, however a few sources in the industry that need to know this sort of thing have received word that it is happening then.
