Most of the Nav events I have seen (paj Challenge and NavRuns). They give you the local maps or atleast tell you which ones you need.
So really you dont need a GPS that does all the mapping stuff. I use a Magellan Plat, which has been very good for both NavRun and Paj Challenge. But we did use my brothers Etrex for some stuff as it was easier to do projections on. And the Etrex would have tobe one of the more basic models.

If really serious some of the chart plotters like the Magellan FX324 (theres a new Garmin out that is supposed to be very good) are very usefull as you are able to input the waypoints much faster as they actually have a keypad. But in the nav events I have done we really didnt use this function much anyway.

We used a 2nd hand laptop and a $100 usb gps off ebay in the navruns last year and did very well with it.
Gave a great overall veiw of where we wanted to go and was very quick to enter the way points. Often we were one of the first to head off and always had time to spare at the end.
