FJ 40 with 307 Chev and smoke

Post by andrew1 »

The 307 chev in the fj 40 I am looking at seems to blow a bit of white/blue smoke on start up and on decelleration, after a good run it seem to not do it until you idle for a while and then give it a few good revs and back comes a bit of smoke. The fellow has had the motor done up and he took it to a mechanic recently and he reckons it is a chev thing a not to worry about it.

The motor runs well except for that. Any ideas out there?? Maybe valve stem seals or maybe worse I am not sure??

Sounds like valve stem seals.

at start up after sitting around for a while the oil has leeched past the valve stem seal and is sitting on the back of the valve head , so at start up it blows smoke and then
when at running and shutting the throttle off after a good run there is a greater vacuum in the bores which sucks oil in past the valve guides , hence valve stem seals.

yep, i got a corvette with a 350 which does blow smoke on start up. that is your problem (stem seals). no real worry when only blowin on start up, but on deceleration its not really that good of a thing. easy to replace though for a mechanic!

My old cruiser had a 283 chev in it, i had it fully rebuilt, didn't blow any smoke for the 50,000 odd kms i had it for.

Me and Stulux recently did his valve guide seals on a blue 253 - plumbed the compressor to the plug hole, and did the seals without removing the heads. Surprisingly easy - but this didn't fix his problem - one head was cracked, so after new rings and bearings, another set of heads pressure tested and seals done, all good :D
