How long is your 2H dipstick?

Post by dogbreath_48 »

The top of my dipstick broke off after a dodgy repair by a previous owner. I got a replacment from the wreckers.

The number on the old one is 15301 - 68020
The number on the new one is 15301 - 68010

When i compare the two, the new one seems to be about 1cm longer, but i'm not sure which one is off - i suspect the repaired one has been shortened in the process, but want to make sure given the numbers are different as well!

So what i ask is, exactly how long is your dipstick, between the F line and the stopper at the top end, the number, and what model/year engine it is out of!

I would really really appreciate someone's help! this 1cm just about makes the difference between F and L!

Mine's the 68010 and it's 547mm long from the 'F' line to the bottom of the rubber. It's out of a 81 model hj 60.

Thanks very very much for that ruffy, someone send this man a beer! (i can't, cruiser=poor). Mine's the same.

Now i need someone with a 68020 to see if they're all the same!

The engine should hold 10.8 litres of oil. If you drain it and measure the amount you put in that should tell you how close it is to correct.

I just measures my old mans as well. Looks like the 68020 and 68010 are the same, at 583mm.

Ruffy, i'm assuming you measured to the lowermost point on the rubber? Wheras me and bigbrowndog measured to the flat stopper (that sits on top of th tube).

Next question: What happens when you overfill? Mine's now 1cm past full. I've heard contact with the crank can cause the oil to foam, but i don't imagine 1cm could make that difference, given the engine is expected to operate on angles..

Yes i measured from the very lowest part of the rubber.
I run mine 1 litre overfull at oil changes cos it tends to burn a bit!! that puts it about 1 cm over the mark. never had a drama.
Cheers
