i want to know how i weld this intercooler pipe.. im going to take out the section in the red square so its shorter.. have to do it for radiator troubles!!
so is it possible to weld? and how?

help!! what do i need to weld this??

Its most likely aluminium so you will need a welder that can do aluminium. Best would be TIG, but you can also use an oxy, mig, etc...
Best way i think would be to remove the part, cut out the bit you want missing, then take the two halves to some small welding business who should do it for you cash in hand nice n cheap.

it may be possible to get another one knocked up from alluminium
and possibly in bigger size pipe
i know some times these things dont like to be welded or can be harder to weld up im not sure why
the boiler maker at work had to weld up a allumium manifold off some yota and he could weld it properly like it welded but had a lot of contamination and was weak (it came back a few weeks cracked in the weld)
just my 2c so if they cant weld they could make another one up easy enough

Wouldn't want to go too much up in size as the extra volume will create more turbo lag. Cut and weld if possible, otherwise a carbon fiber join or extention out to the intercooler??runnin4life wrote:it may be possible to get another one knocked up from alluminium

I would gather that it is pressure cast alluminium.The alluminium as with any cast metal will have a honey comb structure to it when seen under a microscope.So as runnin4life noted,it is a bugger to weld.Being porus it will hold impuritys and when heated enuogh for welding the voids merge and the metal shrinks a bit were you weld.You have to preheat the part before welding to try and avoid cracking and after welding allow the part to cool slowly.I know with cast steel you can aneal the weld erea to take the stress out of the weld not sure about alluminium.
