Toyota 4Runner AUTO box prob

Post by giffo »

I have a 1990 V6 3.0 ltr SR5 LTD AUTO. The auto will not change by itself. BUT you can change it manually without any prob.
Is it a solenoid prob? Can someone help me and what price for such a thing? (if thats what it is) What else could it be.

Help much apprecated,
Steve

depends on your auto dude :)

mines a340h and has 2 solenoids. 1 is faulty intermittently so every now and then I'll have to shuffle gears manually like you

but mine likes to take off in overdrive.... not stop shifting altogether.

When you take off you have to change manually up. When you are in drive it will change to overdrive by itself and back down to 3rd (drive). BUT you have to change down to 2nd the to 1st when you stop. Then the same again when you take off.

What do you think it is and what is my choice?

Thanks
Steve

actually sounds pretty similar to my problem Giffo  Mine is very random though so I'm just living with it for now.

First thing to do is get a copy of the wiring diagram for your box and spend some time tracing it to make sure your problem isn't just caused by a corroded or loose terminal somewhere. There's a bit of electrics attached to these boxes and the auto shop guys tell me that lots of these niggles are just loose terminals on older vehicles.

Then consider getting the auto serviced. You don't have to do that but its a good chance to have a pro look at the box and tell you if it all seems to be in good order. I found that since mine was taking off in overdrive it was lugging and burning the trans oil a bit!!!!

You can also try a bit of electrical contact cleaner sprayed directly into the solenoids. Crack em open and clean them out.........

If it still don't work you can either look at the manualising box from MV Automatics (I think) in Melbourne or buy the solenoid from toyota :? But do the cheap checks first ;) I think in the end the solenoid might be the only choice though :? If that happens post on Toymods first and see if they know any aftermarket sources :)
