upgrading speakers in GU

Post by AndrewPatrol »

I want to get my system pumping a bit more. Yeah i know all the ricey jokes. Anyway i have the standard double-DIN radio/cd/cassette head ( i actually like it ) and door spaekers fr and rear. Question is will upgrading speakers to those two way things with seperate tweeters and better rear door speakers as well do much good? Also is there much point in trying to fit a sub-w or do you need an amp for 'em, Do they really need as big a box ( need all the space i can get ) as what you see in the mags? what about under the rear seat or under front seats. Do good door speakers alone, get the bass happening?? any good forums for this stuff??

Enuf Q's today - appreciate any knowledgeable replies, Thanks

The sound output is only as good as the input - ie, you can get the best and most expensive speakers in the world, but you still only have a factory head unit powering them.

Don't get me wrong, crap speakers give crap sound, and better quality speakers will definitely give better sound. Just don't spend afortune on speakers if you are sticking with the factory head unit.

In terms of bass, well that's just air movement. For good quick bass, get a set of 6x9 speakers. 6x9's don't produce the best sound given that they are not uniform (round) in shape, but to the average Johnny they will sound fine and give better bass response than the factory speakers.

In short, start by getting some decent door speakers - just don't go over the top. I tun the factory speakers with an aftermarket MP3 player and it does me just fine.

And finally - yes, you will need an amp to run a sub (not sure if the factory unit has any outputs for an amp though - I can check as I have the factory unit still).

Oh, and a very quick lesson if you are new to car audio:-

The speakers only put out what is put in. This means, if your head unit delivers 4 x 25W, then 120W speakers and 300W speakers will actually deliver the same level of sound. It's not the speakers - it's the input.

That said, 25W head unit does not mean 25W speakers. You have both "peak" power and "RMS" power. RMS is basically the level of power than can be delivered before distortion kicks (and it applies to both head units and speakers - a head unit will distort the sound if you are using a good set of speakers before the speakers themselves are distorting - you know, when you turn your stero up full and get that crap sound, chances are it is the head unit and not the speakers).

Splits in the front of the cab definatly sound alot better then normal speakers when postioned properly. The catch with splits is, the better quality splits you buy the more hungry they become for power in order to sound descent. I have a pair to type r alpine slpits in my GQ ute that I have to run of an amp as my 60W *4 deck just did not cut the mustard. My mate got a pair of pioneer cheap splits on the other hand and sounded resonable straight off the deck. This was due to the large cone not be geared towards producing much base.

A good pair of 6x9's as gu4800 said would deliver descent bass, as long as they have enough area behind them to do so (i.e have you ever noticed how 6x9 on the rear shelf off cars produce descent base as they have the whole boot behind them). If your current head units has pre-outs on the rear of it, you may be able to pick up a cheap amp for around $200 that could give your speakers a bit more power and therfor clarity when turned up.

I reckon your best option if you dont want to spend to much money is to buy a descent deck, some cheaper splits that do not requier to much power and a pair of 6x9s for the back. It will still sound a heaps better than the standard stuff

thanks guys, was hoping to keep with standard door holes, forgot to mention this is in a wagon. Or maybe, can you fit larger door speakers without butchering too much. If I change head unit to single DIN what fills the hole. My talkie radio's are in roof console already.

you can buy a factory "pocket" from Nissan - they fit them in the DX which only has a single DIN as standard. Factory item = factory fit, and it fits in the existing double DIN brackets.

I posted some pics in this thread:

Check this site out, http://www.caraudioaustralia.com/ it will give you all the answers you need.
Basicaly you need to work out how much you are willing to spend, and buying second hand always helps.
My opinion is upgrade the h/u, get some decent splits, a sub and a 4ch amp. Run the splits off 2 front channels and bridge the other 2 for the sub, and run your rear speakers off the h/u.
