found a big red sticker under my new xtra cab ( on the transfer case i think ) that says ... 1.140 ratio 4WD...
is this standard??
is there any where that i can search my vin number to see what it was or had fitted when it left the factory??

Sorry to be pedantic Serg, but anything made before 1990 isn't a defender. All Defenders in OZ had Tdi or TD5 engines and 1.411:1 High range (possibly apart from some special models).uninformed wrote:defender 110 v8 petrol and tdi = 1.411-1 high range

That is just your high range ratio, it won't affect driving in low range. All LT-230's have the same low range ratio.

Are you sure you didn't misread it? Because I don't recollect tdi defenders/discoveries having stickers on the T.case with the ratio - I know TD5 defenders definitely have the big red sticker with 1.411 on it, and Series 2s have 1.2xx...... So if it were a transplant, I wouldn't have imagined there to be a sticker on it, for that ratio... Could be wrong though, have been quite often.ahh read that to fast so 1.4 is what should be in the td5 and i have 1.14 so it is a custom gear set ? would it be a factory gear set?
As far as 1.14 vs 1.411 goes, 1.14 will have a bit less acceleration in high range, but a higher theoretical top speed (which is irrelevant when you're driving something thats less aerodynamic than a house brick!), while 1.411 would obviously give a little quicker acceleration, with slightly lower top speed. the 1.411 will also mean a few more RPM at any given speed over the 1.14.

Actually it isn't Sam. The model names were originally simply "one-ten" and "ninety" (and of course "one-ten county" and "ninety county" - which was just a higher spec model - carpets, etc.) until 1990 when the Tdi engine was released. It should read 1.410:1, are you certain it is a 1.14???
Serge is right also with the 1.6:1 case in the 4 cyl 110 and 90, only in europe etc, not here. It would be a good gear ratio for the 35" tyre mob and a MD crawler low range!!!
