G'day guys.
I am 19 and looking at getting a secondhand fourby in the near future and was wondering if i could have some opinions on what to get. I have a budget of $9k absolute max including rego and insurance. I need something that is relatively economical, reliable and will handle regular weekends away (no real hardcore work, but a decent workout). Also would i be better going for something stock standard or something that already has a few mods. I am located in Melbourne and will be doing most of my offroad driving around the Eildon region.
If you can find what you're after with a few mods already it could save you a fair bit of $$$ along the way. Just basics like a bullbar or a little lift etc won't be worth a big % of the cars price but can cost a bit to buy seperate.

Watch the trading post every week and you could find a hilux with a lot of mods on it for that price. Just don`t be in a hurry to get one, take your time and you will get a good deal.

Try this - guy selling 1996 Coily Sierra in Mlbourne for what seems a pretty good price. Late model so should be very reliable and Sierras are always pretty capable - even though the coily isn't as capable as the older ones it does have a few nice features to make it easier to live with.
Sounds like it's about what you need - and hey if you want to toughen it up later there's no reason why you can't.
My advice is what was stated above, buy something that already has some mods on it, having to add them yourself later on is more expensive. For that price I'd also want to have some money aside to fix a few things up if your looking at a larger 4wd.
V8 will kill him for insurance. They'll class it as a 'high powered vehicle with a driver under 25'. Stupid, I know. But, I've just been through all this sh*t. Ended up with a big 6 cyl just so I could get insurance. I even struggled with that because of the capacity. (300ci).
My advise is either buy about an 86-87 model zook already modded or do it yourself with the leftover $$$, or buy a single cab Hilux with the 2.4 diesel. Both good starters cars that you would get insurance for without any dramas. If you talk to 83Lux or Bubs, they both drive fairly budget Lux's (no offense Buddy and Scotty), they'll be able to tell you what you can do to them for not a lot of money. Both of theirs go alright, so I'd ask them a few Q's.
A bundera is coil sprung and cheap to run and insure! U don't have to buy mine but i have had good experience with them. I have two, my cousin drives one and i know of four others that r all good off road cabable rigs and cheap to mod.
Thanks for the advice. The Bundy or a GQ sounds good. The sierra is a bit small once i chuck in the swag and a bit of gear and a disco i'v herd is expensive to run and repair not to mention insure.

Thats the best advice so far TFD. Unfortunately i havnt got ne mates with decent 4bies. one has a SWB pajero and he wont take it off road, not that it would get very far with him driving.
