Automatic alternative to manual hub locks?
Greetings,
This may be a stoopid question, but is there an automatic alternative to manual lock/unlock hubs for the GQ Patrol?
Also, is it ok to drive with the hubs locked but the tranny in 2WD? If so, for how long? If I head up the beach on nice hard sand for 30kms, can I just disengage 4WD and go, or should I unlock the hubs too?

some members in my club leave them in all the time.
get TI auto locking hubs, they are set in automatic mode, but they can also be set into a manually locked mode for when the going gets a bit tougher and you need to be 100% sure the hubs dont unlock when you reversing on an incline

i hate the auto hubs.
dont forget that the auto hubs only work foward and not in reverse. so keep it in mind if you ever need to do a recovery in reverse.

Ah....ok. So, we're not talking about a 'hit a button on the dash to lock the hubs' arrangement then? It's auto based on engagement of the 4WD tranny and load or something is it? I'm not considering fitting them.....just wondered what the alternatives were to my manual ones.
I assume all the 'newer' vehicles with auto locking hubs are the abovementioned kind then? It just got me wondering when I spotted a guy playing about with buttons on his dash and going forwards and backwards a small amount, mumbling something about the hubs not unlocking.

On most trips I usually lock the hubs in when I let abit of air out of the tyres. And have been known to forget to unlock them and do lots of K's before remembering to undo them.
I have also been known to forget there locked then next time I go off-roading I have unlocked them by mistake and wondered why the car struggles every where.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
the auto locking hubs are exactly that, auto, they have no in dash mechanism, they rely on movement of the axle to engage.
BUT, you can also manually put them in the LOCK position, after which case they will not unlock when reversing ( like when they do somtimes when they are set in the auto mode)
they are the best of both worlds, Auto most of the time, and LOCKED manually when you want them to be 100% even when reversing

but also hubs have the tendancy of exploding they are much weaker must people are just putting GQ free wheeling hubs and i will be doing this to my GU as well i just found for my GQ but as soon as i can get another cheap set in melbourne I will do my GU.

The auto hubs have a cam which when the axle turns forward or reverse
slides into place.
The cam gear slide`s up contacting the drive gear on the axle and locking
you into 4wd .
When you reverse the cam slides back the other way than back up into
the drive gear which will locked in again` So the hubs will be slightly unlocked for a bees dick

GQ with big nuts
There should be no problem running in 2wd with hubs locked. My MQ came with fixed hubs as Nissan had got tired of warranty claims on burnt out diffs from locals (not Oz or NZ) who not understanding fwh ran with one hub locked and one free. With gas at 10c/litre economy was not a big issue!
I have changed to fwh but kept the fixed hubs as a backup.
